One tiny island in the gulf of Finland comes to represent a complete world full of miracle and mystery, safety and danger as we are swept happily along through the adventures of a feisty, indomitable little girl and her refreshingly different grandmother.
Read this perfect little book and better still, give it to everyone you know for Christmas.

A succinct encapsulation, Fionnuala! Yes, the word, "feisty" was in my mind too - I'm glad it found a place in your review. Sophia's grandmother is made of sterner stuff than I am - I greatly admired her!

You might likeThe Winter Book,Jeanne, in which Tove presents some semi autobiographical pieces about wintering alone on the island (or maybe a different sightly larger one) as well as a few stories about the wider world.
Thanks, Fionnuala, I have actually read "The Winter Book" (at the same time as I first read, "The Summer Book" ) but it's probably time for a re-read. I remember being not quite as enchanted by it, but that's about all!
Right, Jeanne. Yes, I remember that A Winter Book was uneven as a collection but I loved the stories set on the island. There was one about a squirrel that was unforgettable. And the glimpse it all gave into surviving with few supplies and having nature and the sea in your eye constantly. I loved all that.
