Currently a distinguished visiting research fellow at the National Defense University, has devoted his entire life to military affairs. He joined the US Army as a private in 1942, retired as a colonel in 1972 after wartime service in Europe, Korea and Vietnam, then spent the next 24 years as Senior Specialist in National Defense at the Library of Congress. He earned a Master's degree in geography at Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1951, and applied lessons learned to practical problem throughout the rest of his career.
