Brad Pittmay look like he’d only ever play a super suave leading-man role in a spy thriller, but appearances can be… deceptive.
Back in September, Wolfs,PittandGeorge Clooney’s first joint comedy in 16 years, premiered with little fanfare and generally (but not enthusiastically) positive reviews. While the movie about two disparate fixers paired together for a sensitive job didn’t leave much of an imprint on the movie-going internet, it may have sparked a resurgence of interest in Pitt andClooney’s paired filmography, especially in the comedy genre. Over the last couple of months,Twitter,TikTokandReddithave seen a wave of posts discussing Joel andEthan Coen’s 2008 black comedyBurn After Reading, with extra attention paid to Pitt’s performance as the bumbling, jock-brained, wannabe blackmailer Chad Feldheimer, a personal trainer who accidentally finds himself in possession of some sensitive… shit.

Now that they’ve set the year’s best film for a December 10 debut, the Criterion Channel have unveiled the rest of next month’s selection. John Waters’ films are inseparable from John Waters’ presence, making fittingCriterion’s decision to pair an eight-film retrospective (Multiple Maniacs toCecil B. Demented) with his own “Adventures in Moviegoing” wherein the director extols virtues of Bergman, Chabrol,Barbara Loden, andSamuel Fuller. His own Polyester will have a Criterion Edition alongside theBob Dylandoc Don’t Look Back, an iconic film in its own right and, I think, fitting companion to The Unknown with Lon Chaney, also streaming on Criterion. No Country for Old Men and Election receive likewise treatment; the latter appears in “MTV Productions,”a series featuringBeavisand Butt-Head Do America,The Original Kings of Comedy, and (coming close toFreddy Got Fingeredfor least-expected 2024 addition)Jackass: the Movie.

Considered one of the best films of theCoenbrother’s filmography,No Country for Old Menwon several accolades on its release. The neo-Western crime thriller starredJavier BardemandJosh Brolintogether withTommy Lee Jonesand was based onCormac McCarthy’s 2005 novel.
Bardem’s performance as the bold hitman Anton Chigurh was praised by the viewers and critics alike. However, the actor’s reason for greenlighting the script would surprise fans. The actor mentioned feeling out of place for the savage role until he saw the haircut they wanted for his character, the ridiculous get-up made him say yes.

If there's one thingStephen Kingknows pretty well, it's villains. The prolific horror author has been writing basically nonstop since he released "Carrie," his debut novel, back in 1974, and his work has been endlessly adapted for both the big and small screen. In 2009, he even compiled a list of his favorite villains that he didn't create, and it's a pretty solid rundown — which certainly isn't surprising.
From literary icons to on-screen favorites to a villain with a confusingly familiar name — I'll clarify that whole thing when we arrive at that point — here are Stephen King's top ten villains of all time, whom he ranked for Entertainment Weekly at the close of the aughts. King ranked his top 10 from "least villainous" to "most villainous," apparently, so we've preserved that order here.

As major releases continue to hit big screens, 2024 is shaping to be an important year for showbiz and the box-office. Countless conversations continue to cover pandemic recovery, nevertheless, Hollywood now has another pebble in its shoe – can it weather the aftermath of the 2023Screen Actors Guildand Writers Guild of America strikes? So far, things seem to be picking up slowly, but not necessarily at the box-office.
Although the year has seen bright spots early on—like the success of Dune: Part Two—there have also been a slew of disappointments. While films likeMadame Weband Furiosa managed to break even on the back of their production costs alone, they did ultimately become part of the financial disappointments when marketing expenses—which now run the risk of equalling the film’s production costs—are taken into account.

Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” has hit theaters nationwide, chronicling the chaotic 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of “Saturday Night Live”in 1975, releasing on the 49th anniversary of the long-running sketch comedy on October 11. With this movie expected to be a contender at the upcoming 2025 Academy Awards, let’s take a closer look at the filmmaker’s previous four Oscar nominations in three different categories for just two of his films.
After Reitman’s directorial debut in 2005 for “Thank You For Smoking,”he achieved commercial and critical success for his coming-of-age film “Juno”in 2007, starringElliot Pageas the titular teenage character who deals with her unexpected pregnancy and wants to give it up for adoption. Peter Dinklage,Josh Brolin,Glenn Close,Marisa TomeiandBrendan Fraserare lost in this brief and silly Amazon caper about low-level criminals
One thing among many that Joel andEthan Coenseem to instinctively understand is the art of giving their characters funny names: when and how to drop something pleasingly ornate, when to pull back a little, how to toss them off so they don’t sound self-consciously ostentatious. It’s a delicate art; on paper, a character like Moke Munger (Josh Brolin) or his brother Jady (Peter Dinklage) might sound funny and distinctive. But if you’re not careful, your screenplay will soon be over-explaining them as childhood mispronunciations that stuck, and nonetheless surrounding them with other characters sporting similarly nonsensical names like Farful, Freddie Unk or Uncle Crabcake. The differences between those monikers and genuineCoencreations like Hi McDunnough (from Raising Arizona) or Burt Gurney (fromHail Caesar!

Why are we drawn to stories ‘based on a true story’? This phenomenon enchants audiences by offering a blend of entertainment and authenticity, creating a nifty overlap between reality and imagination. Fiction may seduce our minds, but it’s the non-fiction elements that tether us to the ground.
Consider the Coen Brothers (Joel andEthan Coen), masters at transforming the ordinary into cinematic brilliance. They famously claimed that their 1996 crime thriller,Fargo, was ‘based on a true story’.
Fargo(1996) | Credit: Gramercy Pictures
However, this isn’t exactly the case. While the Coen Brothers let us believe the narrative was rooted in real events, they pulled the wool over our eyes with a cheeky twist, blending fact and fiction in a way that was nothing short of genius.

For almost 40 years,Joel CoenandEthan Coen– better known as the Coen Brothers – have created a number of quirky, singular titles spanning a variety of genres. They’ve also become industry and academy favorites, picking up four Oscar wins for writing, directing and producing. Celebrate this dynamic duo by taking a look back at all 18 of their films together, ranked worst to best.
The Coens made their feature debut with the Southwestern neo-noir “Blood Simple”(1984). Shot on a shoestring budget with a then largely unknown cast, the film established the brothers’ talent for visually striking, wholly original stories.
They followed their breakout hit with a series of increasingly ambitious, wildly different features: the wacky Southern farce “Raising Arizona”(1987), the moody gangster saga “Millers Crossing” (1990), the bizarre Hollywood satire “Barton Fink”(1991), and the nostalgic screwball comedy “The Hudsucker Proxy”(1994).

Don't look now, butMatt Damonhas become one of cinema's most exciting screen presences over the last decade or so. Having taken his leading-man looks and turned into a character actor's dream, he's figured out how to enjoy the best of both worlds. IfChristopher Nolan,Steven Soderbergh,Ethan Coen,or any other prolific filmmaker has a buzzy, high-concept thriller in the works, you can almost set your watch based on Damon popping up in a brief supporting role or even a cameo late in the game -- and, more often than not, it's as a scumbag villain meant to reinforce each film's themes. But it's a rare talent that can...
