Thursday night featured an opportunity to celebrate the people behind the scenes who put people on the screens. The Casting Society of America announced the winners of the 36th Artios Awards, recognizing the best casting efforts in feature films, television, and theatre. Hosted byYvette Nicole Brown,it was the first virtual ceremony effort from the organization, as Hollywood continues to make adjustments in light of the ongoing pandemic.
It was also a big night for TV shows a little longer in the tooth, as many of the awards went to series that were already in competition for the 2020 Emmy Awards, meaning that the winners will have little, if any, insight as to this year’s Emmy race. That said, wins for “Normal People,”“Succession,”and “What We Do in the Shadows”are always as welcome as they are well-deserved.

Since “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” landed onAmazonPrime on Oct. 23, it’s been the talk of the town. Also the subject of much discussion:Maria Bakalova, the Bulgarian actor who plays Tutar, the daughter ofSacha Baron Cohen’sBorat. The 24-year-old Bakalova proves to be as hilarious and adept at improvising as the seasoned Cohen, completely committed to her character. Her storyline also brings an unexpected sweetness to the tale, as audiences become invested in the father-daughter relationship and get to see a gentler side ofBorat. She also emerges as one of the feminist icons of the year, going on a journey that takes her from living in a filthy barn and believing women are second-class citizens to being an equal partner of her father and a seasoned journalist. It’s a turn that has already earned Bakalova supporting actress Oscar buzz.

The Casting Society of America has been an institution in casting since their beginnings in 1982, but withMatthew Lessallas the organisation’s President, it has grown into more of a culture of ‘doers’ rather than ‘talkers.’ They have important initiatives in casting recognition, actor support and opportunity, diversity, and inclusivity along with charitable work. The London chapter for U.K. and European members could mean a lot for the way casting directors work, work together, and ultimately have an impact on casting on an international scale. Backstage spoke with Lessall andNancy Bishop,London’s interim Board chair, to find out more. Why has theCsadecided to base their European operation in London, and why now?Matthew Lessall:We have the highest concentration of international members here in London. What Does Empathy Looks Like on the Big Screen?
If, asRoger Eberthas said, movies are a giant machine that generates empathy, what does it look like on the big screen and how do you encourage it in emerging writers and filmmakers? What implications would this have for the filmmaking industry amid a sea change in production deals and distribution? How does it affect the critical writing about films? What influences will it have for society as a whole? And is it tilting at windmills or who has done it successfully?

A senseless crime by a possible sociopath teen on "Stolen Voices, Buried Secrets" (Mon., 10 p.m. Et on ID). A case that sat cold for six months found new life when a teen came forward and pointed to a friend as the killer. The reason for the murders was as ridiculous as the murders themselves.
Nancy Bishopwas 25 years old and two months pregnant when she and her husband were killed in their home. Police found strange markings written in blood next to Nancy's body, as well as a stray bullet. But adding a new level to the case was the fact that the glass was cut to allow the assailant entry. This had them suspecting a professional hit, though there was no known reason for anyone to target the Bishops.
It turned out to be a completely random hit by a teenage boy who had aspirations of being a hitman.

Great casting directors know great acting. So, while CDs may not be Emmy voters, Back Stage asked several of them who they think should be recognized this year. "How aboutJulianna Margulies, remarkable week after week in 'The Good Wife,' with kudos toJosh Charlesas well? OrNathan FillionandStana Katic, who took 'Castle' to a whole new level with their work this year, maintaining their comedic chemistry while bringing the season to a close on a perfectly executed and truly touching note. For both shows, I can't wait to see what happens next season! "—Mike Lemon( "Philadelphia," "The Sixth Sense")" The scintillatingChristina Hendricksof 'Mad Men' should not be neglected in this year's Emmy lineup. "—Nancy Bishop( "Wanted,""Prince Caspian, "author of" Secrets From the Casting Couch ")" [In the guest star category,]Lynn Redgravegave a beautiful, understated performance in the Season 4 premiere of 'Ugly Betty.

ActressNatasha Richardson.
The telephone is the bane of most interviews. Rarely does it allow the interviewer to connect with his or her subject, resulting in a less-than-stellar conversation fit for reproduction. When Venice Magazine PublisherNancy Bishopasked me in December of 2005 if I'd do "a phoner" with actressNatasha Richardson,I was a bit surprised at how quickly I jumped at the chance. I had interviewed Richardson's sister Joely just two months before and, like many cinefiles, have had a lifelong fascination and admiration for their parents: the late filmmaker Tony Richardson and actressVanessa Redgrave.Joely proved a charming, bright and engaging conversationalist during our lunch at The Chateau Marmont, with one of the most fascinating topics of conversation being her sister Natasha, their relationship, and their unconventional, albeit loving, upbringing. Needless to say, my appetite was whetted for more.
