In the early 1960s, Deal was convicted on two counts of violating
liquor laws and one count of conspiring to violate liquor laws. He
never saw any jail time for the crime, but it remained a blemish on his
record for nearly 40 years. In 2001, he filed the necessary papers to
request a presidential pardon and on August 16th, 2006, he was granted
absolution by President
George W. Bush.
