It was another scorching hot day in Egg Harbor Township on Thursday, August 1, but if you had passed bySpirit Halloween’s flagship store on Black Horse Pike, you could’ve mistaken it for October 31st. Celebrating year 41 of business, Spirit Halloween was hosting its annual grand opening event, boasting refreshments, games, and prizes in the form of a spooky carnival, and by the time I had arrived at 8:30am, thousands of guests had already descended upon the store clamoring to be the first ones in when it opened at 10am.
Similar to last year, I was given an opportunity to come tour the store and get a sneak peak atSpirit’s new offerings this year before they would be snatched off the shelves by the eager guests waiting outside. Before I entered, I had a chance to walk around the carnival a bit and chat with some...

Scream, starringDrew Barrymore,is one of the best horror films of this generation. Helmed byWes Craven, this slasher film marked the beginning of a franchise that has become a sort of guilty pleasure for movie lovers.
The film stood out in a lot of ways, but most importantly, it successfully revived the horror genre, which had become a little stale. The director and the creative heads deftly made use of scare tactics for maximum effect. This was not just limited to the audience, though. Even the cast was unaware of the identity of the actor who played Ghostface, which only added to the atmosphere the film aimed to create.

Her social media post about theIsrael-Hamas was deemed antisemitic by the production house behind the franchise, and they decided to let go of the actress in November last year.

The merits of Method acting have often been a matter of debate. But it's true that, in controlled doses, a commitment to the reality of a script can help a performance achieve that next level of authenticity. In other words, we're not suggesting that actors should send their costars dead rats as gifts, but one example that has proven to be effective is the separation of certain actors either on or off-set. Method actors sometimes do this on their own, but it actually occurs more often at the request of a show or movie's director.
Some productions keep actors apart because they are portraying different versions of the same character and the director wants to avoid overlap. Others do it because their characters simply don't meet and, to preserve secrecy, wouldn't want them to meet while production takes place. Still others do it to inspire tension and surprise when characters do meet.

ScreenwritersJames VanderbiltandGuy Busickare somewhat superstitious. This is not to say the pair of scribes believe in things like spirits, jinxes, orBigfoot. But when it comes to collaborating on the script for a beloved franchise, they refuse to tempt fate by discussing what their plans for the next one might be. Instead they treat each film, be it 2022’sScream(akaScream 5) or last month’sScream VI,like potentially the last word on its series. For that reason, they didn’t even begin swapping ideas onVIuntil the project was greenlit and the pair were having their first story meeting.

Based on a concept byMichael Kraetzer,NightmareRadio: The Night Stalker is an anthology feature assembled from short films released as early as 2011. The wraparound segments come from director Charly Goitia, as late-night radio DJ Candy (Paula Brasca) asks listeners to call in and share their real-life horror stories. In between the wild experiences recounted on-air, an obsessed fan takes great lengths to make sure Candy hears his voice – even if it sounds like someone trying to mimicRoger L. Jackson’s Ghostface voice.
Playtime opens the film in the middle of the night, punctuated by a television turning on and awakening a sleeping woman. As she ventures downstairs to investigate, a spectre dressed as a bride appears before piling on the spooky occurrences.

Hot on the heels of a largely positive critical response (see our ownMeagan Navarro’s glowing review here) and an opening weekend performance that has broken franchise records,Scream VI‘s cast and crew are no doubt riding a high right now. The “sequel to the requel” follows the surviving “Core Four” from 2022’s Scream—Sam (Melissa Barrera), Tara (Jenna Ortega), Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown), and Chad (Mason Gooding)–as they leave behind the suburban backdrop of Woodsboro and venture to New York City to start anew.

The two recounted the miserable circumstances they’ve endured throughout the day — from limited bathroom breaks to long lines outside of the Dolby Theatre — before Hernandez chimed in, “But it’s all worth it to askAngela Bassettif she really did the thing.”
The comment was aimed at “West Side Story”starAriana DeBose, who celebrated leading and supporting actress nominees at the 2023 BAFTA awards with a now-viral rap. This article contains light spoilers for "Scream VI."
It's 2023, and the threat of spoilers still holds sway over the majority of the moviegoing and TV watching populace. On the one hand, it's not hard to see why this is the case: live commentary and reactions on social media platforms are as rampant as ever, and the disparity of people's viewing habits means that not everyone is able to see the thing at the same time.
However, while understandable, the weight that the whole "spoiler" concept maintains is not a healthy or necessary one. Yes, plot elements can be "spoiled," ruining an idealized first experience with a work. Any worthwhile story, however, should be truly spoiler-proof.
One of the earliest franchises to try and lock down spoilers during its production is the "Scream"series. Although writerKevin Williamsonspent years refining the original script for "Scream"without worrying about anyone revealing who the killers were,...

Say what you want aboutScream, the 2022 reboot of everybody’s favorite ‘90s/‘00s meta-slasher — it completely understood the pop-culture–osphere it was coming into and commenting on, i.e. the era of endless nostalgia retreads and “requels.” That original cycle was all about making horror movies that bet on how much we, the viewers, knew about the rules of classic horror movies; any attempt to pump fresh blood into the intellectual property had to inherently grok a much different world regarding shared cinematic universes, FilmTwitterdiscourse, Easter eggs,...

Considering that the truly clever meta-ness of the 1996 original has now become curdled with repetition, theScreamfranchise has proven surprisingly durable. By now, the formula is as familiar as the clichéd horror films it satirizes. In between the savage murders committed byGhostface, the characters knowingly point out the tropes being employed or turned upside-down, providing expert commentary that the audiences could write themselves by now.
And yet,Scream VIwill probably prove as popular as most of its predecessors, proving that if you give the people what they want — namely lots and lots of gory stabbings with a little satire thrown in — they will come.
This edition, sporting a Roman numeral in its title for the first time, reunites the four surviving lead characters from its immediate predecessor. And just to spare us the labor of coming up with a nickname for them, one of them provides it himself,...

There was a time when folks just answered the phone whenever it rang. It sounds like the dark ages now, but as a child of the ‘90s and 2000s, I remember well the days before iPhones and Androids; the years when it would seem strange for a high schooler to carry a cellphone; and I even vaguely recall a world beforeScream.
That slasher classic left a deep scar on the zeitgeist when it opened just before Christmas 1996. At a moment when slasher movies were in decline, and horror itself was experiencing something of a fallow period, here was a fresh and exciting chiller that was eager to make audiences cackle as much as shriek. It also began with an opening sequence that became the stuff of infamy:Drew Barrymore, the sweet little girl from E.T., answers the phone on movie night… and is soon cut off by the voice on the other end.

What’s your favorite scary movie?
Nah, that’s too trite.
What horror movie would you show to someone who has never seen one before?
You may have the same answer to both questions, but the latter requires a bit more thought.John Carpenter’sHalloweenis my favorite movie, but I recognize it most likely would not hold up under the scrutiny of a viewer who’s used to flashy modern cinema.
Instead, I would show themWes Craven’sScream.
I know what you’re thinking: wouldn’tScream‘s meta references be lost on a viewer unfamiliar with the trappings of the genre? But one of the many brilliant aspects ofKevin Williamson’s script is how it brazenly draws attention to the tropes before turning them on their head. Ghostfacewill be back on the silver screen soon. For years, dressing up as the character has been a mainstay of Halloween — it's fairly common to see someone decked out in a black cloak-like hood and a white rubber mask with sunken eyes and a screaming mouth on the beloved holiday. Watching someone do that on a regular day, though, could be a particularly terrifying experience, as it was for the residents of Sonoma, California, this week.
With the popular slasher film franchise's sixth installment set to release next week,Paramount Pictureshave developed quite a viral marketing campaign — one that is scaring people enough to call 911 and report an emergency. The Sonoma Police Department in California announced that multiple 911 calls were made on Monday morning about an individual fully clad in a black hood, wearing the iconic costume, ominously standing in the street.
