Zack Snydertouched down at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on Wednesday to offer a sneak peak of his upcoming Norse mythology animated seriesTwilight of the Godsas part of the Next atNetflixshowcase.

Aside from the 2010 animated fantasy adventureLegend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole,theJustice Leaguedirector has worked mainly in live action across his career.

Snydersuggested the process of developing an animation was similar in many ways to that of setting up an action film.

“We do a lot of drawings, and I do love the process before shooting, storyboarding and layout and all that. I like that part of the process when I make a live action film,” he said.

One advantage of animation he suggested was that the director had more direct control over what ended up on the screen.

If nothing else,Zack Snyderhas a distinct style. Much likeMichael Bay,you can recognize aSnyderfilm the moment you watch it. Whether you clock his use of slow motion, his eye for striking imagery and poses, or his slick action, Snyder's background in music video directing means he knows how to craft memorable images in a short amount of time with limited resources.

This is to say, Zack Snyder was always meant to work in animation. Say what you will about his owl movie, which no one saw, but "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole"showed this, with fantastic visuals that matched Snyder's narrative obsession with myth-making.

Now, he's getting another chance at it, with "Twilight of the Gods.

Four years ago, Rebel Moon filmmakerZack Snyderand producing partner and wifeDeborah Snydermet withNetflixexecutives to discuss possibilities in animation.

The medium was growing fast inside the company, as fast as its subscriber base. One exec threw out the idea of doing something with Norse mythology. Zack Snyder, who had spent much of his career making movies with grand mythological overtones, took to it. Partnering with storyboard artist and animation directorJay Oliva,the Snyders eventually came up with a love and revenge story titledTwilight of the Gods.

“We pitched them an outline; they had a few notes but they let us have free reign,” Deborah Snyder toldThe Hollywood Reporterat a Netflix animation event Thursday. “They had no guardrails, no limitations.”

That lack of guardrails or limitations may be the best way to describe the free-wheeling, anything and everything goes ethos that has overtaken Netflix’s animation arm.

Thor,the God of Thunder, is one of the most beloved and fan-favorite characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While fans love his comic book iteration more,Chris Hemsworth’s live-action Thor is not far behind. After several appearances and four solo movies, Hemsworth’s Thor has a separate fan base among the Marvel fandom.

Zack Snyder’s DC tenure is over, as it seems, but he is yet to move on from the glorious legacy he had forged in the DC universe. The director has somewhat given the studio an identity while creating his own universe as we know it as Snyderverse.
