Oz Perkinshas been kicking around Hollywood for some time now, starting out as an actor before pivoting to directing with movies like "Gretel & Hansel"and"The Blackcoat's Daughter"to his name. ButPerkinselevated himself to the next level last year with the release of "Longlegs,"which became the biggest indie horror hit in more than a decade.Neonthen looked very smart, as the company had already partnered with Perkins for his next film, an adaptation ofStephen King's short story "The Monkey."So, with a red-hot director and horror's greatest author teaming up, can this movie become an even bigger hit?
"The Monkey"is currently eyeing an opening weekend between $17 and $25 million, per Box Office Theory. That is stellar news as the film is said to carry a budget in the $11 million range. Mind you, this was already mostly filmed by the time"Longlegs"became an unexpectedly huge hit.

One ofStephen King's earliest short stories, "Here There Be Tygers," has now been turned into an animated short film. King remains one of the most iconic and prolific horror authors of all time, writing novels likeIt,Carrie,The Shining, andMisery, among others, as well as many short stories. "Here There Be Tygers" was first published in Ubris magazine in 1968 before appearing in his SkeletonCrewcollection in 1985. The short story follows a third-grader who discovers a tiger hiding out in the school bathroom.
Dark Corners Films now releases an animated short film called Lily, which adapts the events of King's "Here There Be Tygers." The short film, which clocks in at just under 10 minutes, is told mostly in black-and-white, with splashes of bold red and green to convey some of the story's key themes.Kate Siegel, who is best known for appearing inMike Flanaganprojects...

Stephen Kingis one of the most prolific authors of our time. Not only does the man churn out work at a blistering pace, but in terms of sheer name recognition, he's surely one of the most well-known authors in history. That is in no small part thanks to the fact that many, many of his novels and short stories have been adapted for the screen over the years, both as movies and TV shows. Yet for all of those adaptations, there's still a book that King wrote that he believes would make a great movie. It just hasn't happened yet.

When I hear the nameElizabeth McGovern,I immediately think of ’80s projects she worked on likeOrdinary People,Racing with the Moon,Once Upon a Time in America,The Bedroom Window, and, most of all, She’s Having a Baby. Which probably gives away the fact that I have never watchedDownton Abbey.McGovern has continued working steadily over the decades since the ’80s movies I mentioned, and these days is likely best known for playing the role of Cora Crawley onDownton Abbeyand then reprising that role in two feature films. Next up: Variety reports that McGovern has signed on to join the cast ofAnne Rice’s The Talamasca.

On Sept. 8, 2017,New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. Picturesreleased It: Chapter One, the first of two movies based on the classic 1986 novel byStephen Kingand a film destined to go down in cinema history as the highest grossing horror movie of all time, earning $701 million worldwide against a measly budget of $40 million or so.
It: Chapter One proved that a mainstream, high-quality, studio-backed picture could still be made from King’s work, after a nearly 20-year period in which many adaptations either did moderately well (1408), bombed outright (Dreamcatcher), or vanished into VOD hell.
Naturally, eager studios and producers unveiled a new wave of King adaptations in It’s wake, for theaters, cable, and hungry-for-content streamers. For a while, it seemed like every week brought the announcement of a new King title. But seven years, one global pandemic, and two industry strikes later, many of these projects have yet to...

Stephen Kingmovies have been with us almost as long as Stephen King books — King's first novel "Carrie" became a film two years after it hit bookshelves. And while the adaptations have been coming steadily since the '70s, King movies and TV shows experienced something of a boom in the 2010s. This was primarily due to 2017's film adaptation of "It,"which became a horor blockbuster, hauling in $701.8 million at the box office. Suddenly, everyone wanted to be in the Stephen King business again, and the aftermath of" It "saw a wealth of adaptations get the green light. This trend hasn't died out, either — new King adaptations continue to come our way. A long-delayed take on"Salem's Lot"is due out on Max later this year, and film adaptations of the King short stories"The Life of Chuck"and"The Monkey"are both on the horizon.

Now that a majority of us exclusively use phones that double as handheld computers, the horrors of having no idea who could potentially be on the other line have mostly been eliminated. Perhaps this is why films like "Mr. Harrigan's Phone"and"The Black Phone"have been so popular as of late, but these stories of phones connecting mortals to those beyond the grave are certainly nothing new. In fact, one of the earliest examples comes from a season 2 episode of"The Twilight Zone"about a five-year-old boy who is gifted a play phone by his grandmother (Lili Darvas), who soon passes...

One of the most celebrated cinematic interpretations ofStephen Kingis the two-film adaptation of his seminal horror novel "It." Primarily appearing in the form ofPennywisetheDancingClown(Bill Skarsgård), this otherworldly monster instills fear in its young victims before consuming them entirely.

The screenwriter starlet joke in "Mr. Harrigan's Phone"symbolizes the lack of power screenwriters have in Hollywood, reinforcing the movie's theme of the pursuit of power. Mr. Harrigan tells Craig to look up the joke to discourage him from pursuing a career in screenwriting and to manipulate him into following Mr. Harrigan's path of material gain. Craig's decision to pursue journalism instead of screenwriting, influenced by the joke, ultimately helps him uncover Mr. Harrigan's involvement in a death and frees him from the old man's control.

The Boogeymanhas revivedStephen Kingadaptations after an awful four-year streak. The new film is loosely based on King's 1978 short story and follows a teenage girl haunted by a monster after losing her mother in a car accident. Like King's other stories,The Boogeymandelves into traumatic experiences and how they affect the characters who've endured them. King has never been a fan of mindless horror, and each of his stories holds a deeper message, though, on the surface, they might seem like typical scary stories. Even It, following a killer clown, holds a crucial message about overcoming fear.
Unfortunately, not all of King's adaptations have correctly portrayed his messages. King's greatest criticism ofStanley Kubrick'sThe Shiningis that it left out the message in his book. King compared the film to a nice car with no engine and dispised how Kubrick ignored his message about addiction...

Netflixand Stephen King are respectively the biggest names in streaming and the horror genre so it isn't surprising that there are already severalStephen KingNetflix adaptations streaming on the platform. This isn't to be confused with Stephen King book-based movies that are also streaming on Netflix, such as the modern sequel toItorThe Mist.

Just as sure as the morning will bring the sun, so too will 2023 see the release of anotherStephen Kingadaptation, this time in the form of "The Boogeyman."Perhaps not quite as well known as some of his other work,"The Boogeyman"originated as a short story written by the notorious vending machine hater in 1973 for Cavalier magazine, before later being featured in King's 1978 short story collection"Night Shift"along with works like"The Lawnmower Man"and"Children of the Corn."It's since been twice adapted into a short film, first by Jeff C. Schiro in 1982 and then byGerard Loughin 2010.

It seems like movie adaptations of bestselling horror authorStephen King's work are always being released, as 2022 alone saw a remake ofFirestarterearlier in the year andMr. Harrigan's Phonein October. There is more to come in 2023, with adaptations ofSalem's Lotand The Boogeyman set for release.
However, while fans call King the "King of Horror," there are often moments in his movies that eclipse even what he wrote on the page. This is frightening since he often writes disturbing and terrifying prose, but sometimes horror works best in a visual medium. While sometimes the scariest moments form in a reader's imagination, seeing something horrific can forever burn an image into a viewer's mind.

The upcoming 2023Stephen Kingmovie The Boogeyman will continue a recent unexpected trend in the author’s adaptations with its surprising rating. Despite the failure of 2022’sFirestarterremake and the muted critical reception thatNetflix’s Mr. Harrigan’s Phone received, Stephen King adaptations are still a major horror trend. 2023 alone will see the release of the long-delayedChildren of the Cornremake, the Salem’s Lot remake, and Host directorRob Savage’s adaptation of the short story "The Boogeyman."
However, despite King praisingTerrifier 2’s gross-out gore, readers of the iconic horror writer’s work might be surprised to learn that The Boogeyman will continue a surprising King adaptation trend. Like Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, The Boogeyman will be rated PG-13, meaning the movie won’t be able to depict any extreme gore or seriously dark content. Hollywood can’t get enough ofStephen King’s novels and short stories: an adaptation ofMr. Harrigan’s Phonerecently dropped onNetflix, and an adaptation of The Boogeyman and a new version ofSalem’s Lotare set to arrive next year. I’m going to let you in on a little secret of the trade: Film critics actually want to love everything they watch. The odds may not always be in our favor, and certain assignments inspire lower expectations than others, but nobody shows up for work hoping to be miserable that day — least of all when they’re lucky enough to work a job that offers an occasional measure of outright transcendence.
Which is all to say that, one of these days, I would be absolutely overjoyed to rave about one of the glossy, star-studded, and/or special effects-driven original movies thatNetflixreleases onto its platform without any marketing or festival play whatsoever as part of the streamer’s pact with the dark lord Satan to flood the zone with cinema-flavored content (last summer’s “Hustle”is almost strong enough to feel like the exception that proves the rule...

Stephen King’s works have been a key source material for many horror films and TV shows, from the recently releasedNetflixfilmMr. Harrigan’s Phoneto the canceledHulushow,Castle Rock.Without a doubt, King knows how to fabricate worlds filled with dread and terror â — and inside these worlds are characters and humans that many consider monsters.
With his mountain of short stories and novellas that span genres from horror to science fiction, it’s hard to pin down his most petrifying monsters. That said, users onReddithave been very vocal about which of King’s monsters they find scariest.

Besides novels, King also has a wide selection of short stories, some of which also feature horrendous beings and phenomena. A good example of this is the short story1408,which was about a writer who spends a night in a mysterious hotel room.

Stephen King’s been known to write a doorstop or two, but within the prolific author’s oeuvre are tales that amount to a fraction of “It.” What these novellas lack in page-count, though, they make up for in thrills. Some of the most successful cinematic translations of his work come from this short-fiction subset.
“The Shawshank Redemption”—a two-and-a-half-hour prison drama adapted from the 181-page novella, “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption” —is widely considered one of the greatest movies ever made. Released byNetflixearlier this month and just in time for Halloween, “Mr. Harrigan’s Phone”is the newest product of King’s fruitful relationship with the film industry.
