Landladies Polly Smith and Marie Jones, who operate boardinghouses on the same side of the street, are afflicted with numerous petty envies and jealousies but nevertheless are the best of friends. Polly invests in the stock market and begins to reap rewards, but she is unable to persuade Marie to use her life's savings to buy shares of American Cheese or Brazilian Bananas. Meanwhile, Marie's daughter Genevieve and Polly's son William, just back from college, fall in love, but an argument between the ladies breaks up the romance; smarting under Polly's patronizing manner, Marie plunges into the market herself and with the winnings is able to stage a society splurge at a fashionable resort. In their efforts to outdo each other, Polly and Marie inevitably come together, and a reunion of the lovers becomes possible.

Circus artist Alicia deserts her husband and child to elope with Underwood, her handsome lover. Fifteen years later, Alicia's deserted daughter Annie Martin is a trapeze performer in a Coney Island sideshow operated by Mr. and Mrs. Chubb, and has married Howard Jeffries in spite of opposition by his wealthy parents. Jeffries, Sr., hires a man--Underwood--to separate the young couple. Underwood convinces the newlyweds that each is being unfaithful to the other, and consequently he is threatened by Howard. Driven to fury by Underwood's uncontrollable demands, Alicia shoots him in a quarrel and makes her escape just as Howard enters; despite his innocence, Howard confesses to the crime when subjected to the third degree. Annie, realizing her mother's guilt, claims to be guilty, but Alicia then confesses. Annie is saved from suicide by Howard, and they are united by love.

Russ Kane obtains work as a pilot in the airmail service with the purpose of robbing the mails. However, during his training period at the Reno field, he becomes imbued with the spirit of the service and dedicates himself to getting the mail through. Russ is forced to make an emergency landing near a ghost town, where he meets Alice Rendon and her invalid father, who is badly in need of medicine. Russ repairs his plane and promises to return on the following day with the elder Rendon's medicine. Making good on his promise, Russ returns, carrying with him a valuable mail shipment and his friend, Sandy. The plane is attacked by two planes belonging to a gang that smuggles dope and aliens across the Mexican border. Sandy makes a parachute jump with the mail sack, and Russ maneuvers his craft so that the pursuing planes are forced to crash. Russ then lands his plane, only to discover that the Rendons have been captured by three escaped convicts. Russ manages to bring the men to justice, winning the gratitude and love of Alice. Sandy realizes the crowning ambition of his young life and delivers the mail.

Poor working-class girl Stella marries wealthy Sidney Brock, recently jilted by his fiancée and social equal Connie. The two go through contentious times with the Brock patriarch, but when Stella becomes a mother, she seems to becomes accepted, although it's used as a way to shift Sidney's and the child's affections from her. Connie comes back into their lives, now seeking to reclaim Sidney, and manipulates the situation to convince Stella that he's been seeing her. So Stella decides to get a divorce, but fortunately, Sidney becomes aware of the deception in time.

Felice, a peasant girl who lives near Florence, Italy, is so beautiful that the villagers call her the "Passion Flower." Jules Mardon, a French artist traveling in Italy for his health, paints Felice, winning her love in the process. Upon the portrait's completion, however, he abandons Felice and returns to Paris, where the painting earns him wealth and fame. Millionaire Armand de Gautier falls in love with Felice's image, buys the portrait, and then seeks out and marries the model. Several years after the birth of the happy couple's child, Armand commissions Jules to paint his wife and son, whereupon the artist again tries to seduce her. When Felice learns that Armand, assuming she has abandoned her plague-stricken child to be with Jules, wants no more to do with her, she kisses her son and then, with the disease on her lips, searches for Jules and kisses him. The artist dies, but Felice and her son survive to be reunited with Armand.

"Grumpy" Anderson is an old railroad engineer that is obsessed with keeping his train on schedule, no matter the cost. His two sons are also rail men, but don't share his single mindedness, which leads to one son's death and a fight with the other on the first son's funeral car leads to a crash, and demotion of Grumpy to mechanic in the yards. His redemption comes during the Mississippi flood, when he is again pressed into service to pilot a relief train along with his surviving son.

The Shannons, a vaudeville act, are performing in a New England town when the local hotel owner barges in and yanks his daughter Tessie, who is in the audience with her boyfriend Chuck, out of the theater. Young Mickey Shannon confronts the father, and the upshot is that Chuck's wealthy father threatens to foreclose on the hotel. The Shannons wind up buying the hotel, but it turns out not to be quite the deal they thought it was.
