Few filmmakers working today make movies as sensual — or as sensuous — as Luca Guadagnino. From the sun-ripened romance of Call Me By Your Name, to the cannibal carnalism of Bones And All and the mouth-watering ménage à trois at the centre of this year’s Challengers, the Italian auteur has been making movies sexy again since long before sex (or a lack thereof) in cinema became a daily discourse driver. And his latest, a long-gestating adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ semi-autobiographical book Queer — in which Daniel Craig plays a lustful American ex-pat who falls head-over-heels for a young buck (Drew Starkey) in mid-century Mexico City — could well be his most smouldering work to date.
For Daniel Craig, whose path first crossed with Guadagnino’s some 20 years ago, just before a little franchise called James Bond catapulted him into the global spotlight, an opportunity to work with the Suspiria filmmaker at...

Luca Guadagnino and Daniel Craig, who recently joined forces on the A24 indie “Queer,” are reuniting on a much grander scale. The duo are circling “Sgt. Rock,” an adaptation of the comic book, for DC Studios. No word on the plot, but it will probably involve a lot less sex and drug taking than their prior collaboration.
The deals haven’t been finalized, so the project could fall apart. But the studio is bullish on the script from Justin Kuritzkes, who previously wrote “Challengers” and “Queer” for Guadagnino. The new movie is being developed under DC’s new leadership team of James Gunn and Peter Safran, who have been reinvigorating the company.
Gunn’s upcoming “Superman,” which debuts in 2025, is intended to kick off a new era for the comic book studio. DC has struggled to maintain consistency (for every “Joker” there’s been a “Joker: Folie à Deux”) and...

Luca Guadagnino may not seem like the most obvious fit to helm a comic book/superhero movie, but the filmmaker is believed to be in talks with DC Studios to direct an upcoming Dcu project.
Jeff Sneider first mentioned that Guadagnino was "being courted for a future Dcu movie" in his newsletter back in September, and Nexus Point News later weighed in, claiming to reveal the film he's in talks to direct.
Guadagnino is reportedly set to helm a Sgt. Rock movie, and his Challengers and Queer collaborator Justin Kuritzkes is on board to pen the script. The project is said to be a "period piece set during World War II."
Now, Nexus Point News has shared a very interesting update. According to the site, former James Bond Daniel Craig is the filmmaker's "first choice" to play the title role.

Tilda Swinton is an Oscar-winning actress who has been a favorite of both the art house crowd and the multiplexes, consistently taking on challenging roles in both indie fare and box office hits. Let’s take a look back at 19 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1960 in London, England, Swinton got her start working with experimental filmmaker Derek Jarman, making her movie debut in the director’s “Caravaggio” (1986). She won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress in his film “Edward II” (1991), kicking off a decades-long romance between the actress and awards groups. She also showed her willingness to push herself in offbeat projects with daring auteurs, an edict that would lead to collaborations with Luca Guadanigno, Jim Jarmusch, Bong Joon Ho, Sally Potter, Wes Anderson and the Coen Brothers.

You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a movie musical where the words “mammoplasty, vaginoplasty, rhinoplasty” play out in song. Nor have you lived until you’ve seen that same movie musical in which Selena Gomez says the words “My pussy still hurts when I think of you.” And you’ve never seen a movie musical at all about transness that takes as bold of swings as Jacques Audiard‘s “Emilia Pérez,” which is stylistically unforgettable while missing the crucial element that makes any movie musical work: Actually good, memorable songs.

This post contains mild spoilers for "Blood Creek."
Vampire horror movies are a dime-a-dozen, often falling into the same genre trappings or retreading familiar storylines. This is not always a bad thing, though, as long as there's fun to be had: films like "Blade" or "Van Helsing" entertain us by expertly balancing thrilling action with dramatic tension while knowing it is best not to indulge in self-seriousness. Well, what about an odd little vampire tale that is both campy and self-serious, as well as equal parts ridiculous and entertaining? Welcome to Joel Schumacher's unforgettable "Blood Creek," where a Nazi vampire scholar named Richard Wirth (a young Michael Fassbender) wreaks havoc after being freed from captivity by two brothers who really should have known better. Henry Cavill and Dominic Purcell play Evan and Victor Marshall, respectively, and it is up to this duo to try and stop this near-immortal Nazi...

Luca Guadagnino and Lionsgate announced that the “Call Me by Your Name” and “Queer” director is in final discussions to film a new version of Bret Eason Ellis’ dark horror novel “American Psycho,” nearly 25 years after the same company released Mary Harron’s satirical adaptation. In a key role that elevated his career, the 2000 film starred Christian Bale as yuppie investment banker-turned-serial killer Patrick Bateman.
It’s the kind of announcement destined to raise eyebrows. Guadagnino is in a career sweet spot after “Challengers” and “Queer” this year (and “After the Hunt” in post); he already has many projects in the works, including “Separate Rooms” with Josh O’Connor and a Thomas Mann adaptation in early development. So why is he choosing a remake — and for a film that doesn’t seem that long ago?
New versions of older films are not unusual. Even the word “remake” is tricky here — does that apply with adaptations?...

With Luca Guadagnino set to direct a new take on Bret Easton Ellis’s novel, speculation abounds on who should play the vain serial killer
Earlier this week it was announced that Luca Guadagnino was in final negotiations to direct a new adaptation of American Psycho, instantly igniting an online discourse that refused to die down.
Inevitably, the bulk of the discourse was overwhelmingly negative. Some corners of the internet were upset that Guadagnino had the opportunity to direct The Shards – another, newer, Bret Easton Ellis book – but instead chose to work over old ground. Many seemed to be the “But it’s already perfect” camp, citing both Mary Harron’s impeccable 2000 adaptation and the lukewarm reception doled out to Guadagnino’s weirdly austere Suspiria remake.

Members Club is a new horror comedy about Wet Dreams, a troupe of male strippers who were at their prime back when The Full Monty was a thing. Now they’re well into middle age, their middles are well out of shape and the bookings are drying up. Drying up to the point that their manager, Deano has just dropped them. But not before managing to book them a gig at a 12-year-old’s birthday party.
Refusing to admit defeat, or face the prospect of getting a real job, Alan takes charge and soon has a well-paid gig lined up. Of course, we know there’s a catch, but all Alan, Neil, Ratboy, and Carly can think of is the promise of their first big payday in years.

Luca Guadagnino has already blown audiences away this year with the release of Challengers back in April, a sexy and stylish tennis movie that received high praise for its performances, direction and cinematography. His second feature of the year, Queer, stars Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey and has been adapted from the short book of the same name by author William S. Burroughs. It again sees Guadagnino collaborate with writer Justin Kuritzkes who also penned the script for Challengers. Craig plays William Lee, an American expat in his late forties who leads a solitary life amidst a small American community in 1950s Mexico City. However, the arrival of Eugene Allerton (Starkey), a young student, stirs William into finally establishing a meaningful connection with someone. A beautifully introspective and tender portrait of identity and longing, Queer boasts exceptional performances, a delightful slow-burn storyline and stunning cinematography, even if the whole picture...

American Psycho has developed a cult following over the last two decades since the Christian Bale-led film was first released in 2000. The film is based on Bret Easton Ellis’ novel of the same name and gained notoriety for its commentary on consumerism and 1980s yuppie culture, which are reflected in Bale’s memorable performance.

Recently, a new adaptation of the popular novel was revealed to be in the works. The forthcoming film is expected to be helmed by director Luca Guadagnino and will update the core story centered on Patrick Bateman for a new audience. However, unlike Bale’s performance, which was based on Tom Cruise, the new film offers an opportunity for a fresh take on the cult character, which might vindicate Cruise.

Luca Guadagnino is set to direct a new interpretation of American Psycho for the big screen. Christian Bale’s 2000 adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ original novel was helmed by Mary Harron, who also wrote the screenplay alongside Guinevere Turner. Harron’s film is a cult hit and fans aren’t happy that Guadagnino is directing a “remake.”

However, Lionsgate has enlisted Scott Z. Burns to write the screenplay, which will stay close to the original material, unlike Harron’s film. Moreover, some fans are against the move, sharing that the success of Bale’s movie stemmed from the female vision behind it, namely Harron and Turner.

Luca Guadagnino is becoming an Italian Psycho.
The “Queer” and “Challengers” filmmaker is in final negotiations to sign on for an “American Psycho” adaptation at Lionsgate, Deadline reports.
Guadagnino’s take is described as a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel, about a Wall Street investment banker who moonlights as a serial killer. Scott Z. Luca Guadagnino is in final talks with Lionsgate to direct a new version of American Psycho based on Bret Easton Ellis’s controversial 1991 satirical novel.
Scott Z. Burns, whose writing credits include The Bourne Ultimatum and Contagion, will write the screenplay to what is conceived as a new adaptation of the novel, rather than a remake of the 2000 version directed by Mary Harron from a screenplay by Harron and Guinevere Turner.
That film starred Christian Bale as the titular character and Lionsgate distributed in North America.
In the novel, Patrick Bateman is a mentally unstable Manhattan-based banker who hails from a wealthy clan.

Earlier this year, we wrote about how Lionsgate wanted to mount a new version of "American Psycho," and now the studio has found its director: Luca Guadagnino, the director behind "Call Me By Your Name," "Challengers," and the 2018 remake of "Suspiria," who seems to be a perfect choice for this new take.
I say "new take" because there's an important distinction to be made here. Per the report in Deadline, Guadagnino is not remaking the 2000 movie written and directed by Mary Harron, which stars Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, a Wall Street finance bro who also happens to be a vicious serial killer. Instead, Guadagnino is re-adapting the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis, which is a lot sicker and more twisted than the film.
There's very little information about this project other than the fact that it's in the works, but Guadagnino, who's currently promoting his latest film "Queer" — which...

Scott Z. Burns will be scripting the new movie, which is being described as a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s aforementioned novel, rather than a remake of the 2000 movie.
The book was previously adapted by director Mary Harron from a screenplay by Harron & Guinevere Turner, with Christian Bale starring in that original (and iconic) movie adaptation.
In the tale, “A wealthy New York City investment banking executive, Patrick Bateman (played by Christian Bale in the 2000 movie), hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies.”

What are you looking for in a sequel? Dependable familiarity or narrative evolutions? Parker Finn's Smile 2 is a sharper, meaner, and despicably addictive amplification of Smile that doesn’t tamper with what works. Finn's execution of trauma-driven haunts is an upgrade across the board, albeit recognizable. It's funnier, flashier, scarier, and doesn't feign complacency even for a millisecond. Smile 2 is an invigoration of exposed demonic templates (typed by someone lukewarm on Finn's successful original). Move over, Lady Raven; Skye Riley's taking center stage.

It is nearly impossible for Luca Guadagnino to discuss one of his films without folding his cinematic hero, Bernardo Bertolucci, into the conversation. While on an upcoming episode of IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast about his forthcoming release, A24’s “Queer,” Guadagnino revealed his documentary about the great Italian director behind such films as “The Last Emperor” and “The Conformist,” who passed away in 2018, is much further along than we thought.
“I’m editing it now,” said Guadagnino while on the podcast. “I have a few more conversations I want to have. Actually, Marty Scorsese, I want to talk to him about it. We’ve been shooting for a while now. They’re not interviews; it’s a conversation. It’s a very personal movie. I am the protagonist of the movie. It could be called, ‘Bertolucci and I,’ which it’s not going to be.”

At The Streamable, we love watching movies and TV for free, especially if we don’t have to sit through ads. Tubi is great, but seeing an ad for car insurance in the middle of your movie tends to kill the vibe. As we race to Halloween, we looked up all the best scary movies and found that a huge number were streaming ad-free on Kanopy, which is free if your library participates. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Hoopla is another free streamer that just added a major horror partner.
Your library probably partners with either Kanopy or Hoopla (or both!), giving you an unexpectedly great package of ad-free entertainment.

It’s spooky-season which means it’s time for chilly weather, falling leaves and, of course, horror movies. We’re celebrating the genre by honoring those that make it so special with a countdown of the greatest scream queens working today.
7. Anya Taylor-Joy Robert Eggers hates his debut film The Witch starring Anya Taylor-Joy
Anya Taylor-Joy took over the high-octane, adrenaline-fueled world of Mad Max with this year’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, but its her work in the terrifying world of horror that gets her on this list. Starting with Robert Eggers The Witch, the talented young actress went on to showcase her skillset in the genre through a wide range of films while working with some of the most talented filmmakers in the business. Split, Last Night in Soho and The Menu are prime examples of what makes Anya Taylor-Joy a true scream queen.

Made up of four separate The Last Dinner Party music videos Harv Frost’s Giallo-inspired short Prelude to Ecstasy is the culmination of the band’s first chapter. The film tells the story of a mysterious dance school that holds a power which could both enhance and destroy those who embrace it, an allegory of sorts for how the band views the music industry at large. The visual language across the board feels very The Last Dinner Party. It’s decadent, stylish, and captured on 16mm, which gives it a mysterious, tactile texture akin to staples of the horror genre like Argento’s Suspiria or Roeg’s Don’t Look Now. With the film unsurprisingly racking up views online, Dn caught up with Frost to learn about her vision for the film, the process of conceiving the film’s overarching narrative and embracing the band’s creative spontaneity.

From an evil queen pondering “Mirror, mirror on the wall: Who is the fairest of them all?” to Three Weird Sisters chanting “Double, double toil and trouble! Fire burn, and cauldron bubble,” witchcraft has been something of a skeleton key across centuries of storytelling on screen and in print. As old as ghost stories themselves, witches are fabled beings — typically more human than creature, but sometimes vice versa — known for using magic to abuse and manipulate us mere mortals.
Some witches feed on children; see Roald Dahl‘s “The Witches” and its two film adaptations starring Anjelica Huston and Anne Hathaway respectively. Some witches just want to be loved; consider the appropriately-named “The Love Witch” or the middle chunk of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” Others crave beauty, youth, power, or something altogether more sinister; think the unending greed examined in Luca Guadagnino’s astounding re-imagining of Dario Argento’s “Suspiria.

Horror movies such as Halloween are known for their theme songs. Some movies took things a step further by giving us awesome original songs. Here’s a look at the best of them — some we remember and some we sadly don’t.
5. ‘Tubular Bells’ from ‘The Exorcist’
According to Collider, “Tubular Bells” by Mike Oldfield wasn’t written for The Exorcist. Regardless, we wouldn’t be discussing this track if it didn’t appear in William Friedkin’s horror blockbuster. The song starts out a tad tense, like it’s the theme song for a legal show, before getting more and more ominous and working in scare chords. The tune wasn’t written for a scary movie but it was meant for that context.
Later horror themes, such as those for Halloween and Suspiria, took their cues from “Tubular Bells.” Oldfield went on to have a pop career — he even...

‘The Big Chill’ Meets ‘Freaky Friday’ by Way of ‘Black Mirror’ — Greg Jardin on ‘It’s What’s Inside’
When writer, director, and editor Greg Jardin began working on “It’s What’s Inside,” his expectations were modest. “I’d been trying to make a film for 10 years and was unsuccessful because my other projects were too large,” he told IndieWire. “I wrote ‘It’s What’s Inside‘ as a low-budget, one-location thing really just as a means to make a movie. I was hoping that someone would buy it and it would break even.”
“It’s What’s Inside” did a lot more than break even, selling to Netflix for a reported $17 million after a triumphant screening at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. It’s easy to see why Jardin’s film connected with audiences as well as buyers; its story of old friends (and enemies) who reunite for a wedding and find their lives thrown into chaos by a machine that allows them to switch bodies is a wild and hilarious ride that veers...

There was a time when Marvel Studios and its dedicated fan base were making it seem like their movies and shows should be judged within the parameters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, if they made a spy-thriller film like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and I compared it with, let’s say, The Bourne Identity and came to the conclusion that Tws was bad, that was considered unfair. If they made a legal sitcom like She-Hulk and I compared it with something that’s referenced in that miniseries, Ally McBeal, and said that She-Hulk seemed like a cheap copy of Ally McBeal, then I’d be called a hater. But now, Marvel’s aura has dissipated quite a bit due to the decrease in its output, thereby pushing people to watch original stuff. So, I don’t think I’ll be burned at the stake for saying that...

“Sabrina the Teenage Witch” is a certified Criterion title, believe it or not.
The beloved franchise about a beloved occult teen, iconically played by Melissa Joan Hart, is officially amongst the new streaming selections for the Criterion Channel. “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” centered on Sabrina (Hart), a high school student who lives with her two aunts Hilda (Caroline Rhea) and Zelda (Beth Broderick) as she navigates coming into her powers. Her cat Salem (Frank Conniff) also provides snarky spiritual guidance.
The ABC-produced franchise was based on the comic book series that debuted in 1971. The “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” show is available to stream on Paramount+ as of 2023.
The 1996 TV movie was a spinoff of the TV series, and was followed by 1998’s “Sabrina Goes to Rome” and 1999’s “Sabrina Down Under.”
Now, “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” joins Criterion’s “Witches” programming for October 2024, ushering in the 40-year anniversary of the Criterion platform.

The Criterion Channel’s at its best when October rolls around, consistently engaging in the strongest horror line-ups of any streamer. 2024 will bring more than a few iterations of their spooky programming: “Horror F/X” highlights the best effects-based scares through the likes of Romero, Cronenberg, Lynch, Tobe Hooper, James Whale; “Witches” does what it says on the tin (and inside the tin is the underrated Italian anthology film featuring Clint Eastwood cuckolded by Batman); “Japanese Horror” runs the gamut of classics; a Stephen King series puts John Carpenter and The Lawnmower Man on equal playing ground; October’s Criterion Editions are Rosemary’s Baby, Night of the Hunter, Häxan; a made-for-tv duo includes Carpenter’s underrated Someone’s Watching Me!; meanwhile, The Wailing and The Babadook stream alongside a collection of Cronenberg and Stephanie Rothman titles.
Otherwise, Winona Ryder and Raúl Juliá are given retrospectives, as are filmmakers Arthur J. Bressan Jr. and Lionel Rogosin.

You used to hear the refrain from horror film fanatics with a lot more frequency – the original was so much scarier.
And while this is still true to some degree (the films of John Carpenter have been remade with an oddly uniform lousiness), there are still plenty of horror films that have been remade well. Sometimes the remakes are just as good as the original. In rare cases, it even surpasses the original.
Here is our definitive list of the very best horror remakes ever.
(United Artists) “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1978)
Don Siegel’s 1956 classic “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” is based on Jack Finney’s story “The Body Snatchers,” which was serialized in Collier’s in 1954 and published as a novel shortly after, has been remade several times over the years. But the very best iteration is still the 1978 version, the first since Siegel’s, from director Philip Kaufman and writer W.D. Richter.

Horror films have always been a way to interrogate the anxieties of a time, society, or culture and reflect them to the viewer -- like a twisted funhouse mirror. Fear is a universal emotion and history is known to repeat itself, so horror is a genre filled with remakes, some of which are very good. Sometimes, like in the case of Leigh Whannell's "The Invisible Man," a remake evolves into something entirely different than the original story to better resonate with modern audiences. And sometimes a remake is, unfortunately, nothing more than a blatant cash grab from a studio looking to squeeze some blood out of the all-holy stone of "Recognizable IP."
And then there are the most controversial of all remakes: the Americanized remake.

You have Italian mega director Dario Argento, Oscar nominated Piper Laurie, James Russo, Brad Douriff, and special effects by another master of his craft in none other than Tom Savini. I set you up with all those names and accomplishments and maybe you wrack your brain on the possibility that you have seen or even heard of the movie. But I say have you seen the 1993 horror movie Trauma (watch it Here) and I’m guessing for most people, the answer will be no. Writer/Director Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) refuses to color within the genre lines in her feature adaptation of Rachel Yoder‘s novel, Nightbitch. Heller employs everything from poignant family drama to pitch black comedy to horror fairy tale to highlight the complexities of motherhood and identity. It’s so defiant of easy categorization and tone that marketing has their work cut out for them, which is to say that Nightbitch isn’t quite what the trailer suggests. Mother daydreams about acerbically expelling her darkest inner thoughts to a former coworker she bumps into at the grocery store, a familiar scene capturing the exhausting nature of parenthood. Not helping...

What made Christian Tafdrup’s Danish nihilistic horror film “Speak No Evil” — an even more hopeless take on “Funny Games” and its vivisection of bourgeois manners and cruel whetting of audience appetite for carnage — so shocking was what wasn’t spoken. Namely, the Nordic social code that says you should never enter a stranger’s home especially when anxiously invited, and that the invitation alone should be a flashing red light to avoid mingling your family vacation with another’s. As American studios are almost perversely compelled to do, here “Speak No Evil” gets a safe, devoid-of-scares remake directed by James Watkins, hailing from the Blumhouse factory of mainstream scares. Watkins is an appropriate match for a remake, if it had to happen at all, given his pedigree as the director of the chilling “Eden Lake,” about a romantic weekend terrorized by delinquents without a clear motive.
But this version of “Speak No Evil,...
