The "Ballad of Davy Crockett" was Actually a Song Made Famous when Walt Disney Aired a 3-Part 1 Hr Mini-Series...
During the Phenom a Rabid Fan Base of "Baby-Boomers" Acted-Out the Saga in Back-Yards and Playgrounds Across America...
it Created a Merchandising Empire and the 45-RPM Records, got Constant "Radio Play" and Infectiously Sold 10 Million Copies in 1-Year 1955-56...
This Movie, for some Reason Ignores the "Ballad", Except for the Title...the Phrase "King of the Wild Frontier" (the Disney Tag-Line) is Mentioned by "Davy" Once.
This Movie is a Low-Budget, Good-Looking "Yarn" that is a Fun-Watch...
Nothing Special, but an Engaging Short-Span in the Life-Span of a Rustic, Honorable Man...It's Sort of a Tease...
Further Research is a Rewarding Experience...The Movie Leaves the Viewer Wanting More than this "Little" but Commendable Snap-Shot.
It's a Family-Affair...
the Story is Built Around the Crockett Clan, Their Struggling Containment in a Tennessee Cabin-in-the-Woods...
where His Beloved Wife "Polly" and the 2 Adolescent Boys Patiently Await the Return of Their "Pa" in the 2nd Act.
It's Worth a Watch but is Ultimately an "Unsung" Pioneer Slice-of-Life by the Known Exploits of a "Larger Than Life" American who Died Along-Side 200 Other Unfortunates, as Most Know, "Remember the Alamo"...His Legend Lives, Forever More. The Good-Natured...Please Call Me "David" Crockett.
Here are the Lyrics to the "Ballad"...
Born on a mountain top in Tennessee Greenest state in the land of the free Raised in the woods so's he knew ev'ry tree Kilt him a b'ar when he was only three Davy, Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier In eighteen thirteen the Creeks uprose Addin' redskin arrows to the country's woes... Now, Injun fightin' is somethin' he knows So he shoulders his rifle an' off he goes Davy, Davy Crockett, the man who don't know fear Off through the woods he's a marchin' along Makin' up yarns an' a singin' a song Itchin' fer fightin' an' rightin' a wrong He's ringy as a b'ar an' twic't as strong... Davy, Davy Crockett, the buckskin buccaneer He fought single-handed through the Injun War Till the Creeks was whipped an' peace was in store An' while he was handlin' this risky chore Made hisself a legend for evermore Davy, Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier He give his word an' he give his hand That his Injun friends could keep their land An' the rest of his life he took the stand That justice was due every redskin band Davy, Davy Crockett, holdin' his promise dear He went off to Congress an' served a spell... Fixin' up the Govern'ments an' laws as well Took over Washin'ton so we heered tell An' patched up the crack in the Liberty Bell Davy, Davy Crockett, seein' his duty clear When he come home his politickin' done The big western march had just begun... So he packed his gear an' his trusty gun... An' lit out grinnin' to follow the sun Davy, Davy Crockett, leadin' the pioneer He heard of Houston an' Austin an' so To the Texas plains he jest had to go Where freedom was fightin' another foe An' they needed him at the Alamo Davy, Davy Crockett, the man who don't know fear His land is biggest an' his land is best From grassy plains to the mountain crest... He's ahead of us all meetin' the test Followin' his legend into the West Davy, Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier.

What a dumb movie, full of lies and misrepresentations of a really decent man. In 1815 when this movie takes place Davy has already lost his wife Polly in March, and has 2 sons and a daughter. He didn't support the Indian Removal Act which wasn't introduced until 1830 Nonsense scenes of wolves attacking him and 'taming' horses already so tame they came up to his camp in the woods. Where do these Hollywood directors come up with this malarkey. Davy's life was already so interesting its too bad they didn't make a movie about that! Colm Meaney does a good job of playing an a--hole. The whole Northwest Fur Trading Company in the Southest - hmmm, that company was mostly in Canada. Beautiful scenery though.
The dialogue was stilted and unbelievable and the plot made little logical sense from one scene to the next. The historical inaccuracies were bad enough but were largely irrelevant in the long run. It almost seemed that they added a couple of scenes and a line or two of dialogue as an afterthought in order to tie it to the actual Davey Crockett. The acting was inconsistent but no amount of skillful acting could have saved this dog of a movie. How it's gotten 6 stars is a mystery to me.
I'm an old man who remembers fondly the Disney movie from my youth. I realize now how juvenile in some ways it was; but, at least, it made sense for the intended audience. This one makes no sense for anyone with a functional brain cell. It was just horrible!

If you're going to make historical fiction you should at least try and make it interesting. Most of the actors are sub par and are so reserved and disjointed that they aren't even believable as real people. You took an actual interesting man's life and made it boring. I can't imagine why anyone thought this was a good product. My wife commented part way through that a few of the actors looked like they were animatronics. If you want a movie to make fun of while you watch it this is the movie to watch. If you're hoping for anything else I would save your time. The movie also seems to go for zero violence in an action movie.

I could not continue watching this movie because it has no regard for actual history. Crockett's wife did die in 1815 but then it showed Davy in a meeting with Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren when he got the news that she was ill. Davy didn't even enter state politics until 1821 and was no where near Washington DC until 1827. Jackson and Van Buren didn't win the White House and push the Indian Removal Act until 1831. That is when Davy became and Anti-Jacksonian.
Anyway, others have said how un-interesting the movie was and I agree. But when you can't even get the storyline to match the facts, you have to create it all and that is why the story lacked entertainment. I became suspicious when they showed his boys to be early teens and Crockett was only 29 years old when his wife died. I'll go watch the 1955 version or the 1960 "The Alamo" and at least get somewhat accuracy.

Several of the other reviewers give this movie low marks because it's not historically correct. One guy even used the word "disgusting" several times. There is nothing disgusting about this movie. No, it's not historically accurate but it does not claim to be a documentary or even biographical. It's just a story that uses Davy Crockett as it's main character. How many other westerns have depicted historical characters in ways that were not true to the historical record? Mercy, these days even so called documentaries are questionable, depending on their sources. This movie is enjoyable! Are a few scenes a little beyond belief or nonsensical? Absolutely, but this is true of most movies. Besides, many of us don't watch movies to see everything believable and realistic. We watch movies as a break from real life and just to be entertained. All the acting in this movie is very good. The script could have been a little better but it wasn't cringe-worthy by any means. My husband and I both enjoyed this. Clean, decent westerns that are actually good are very hard to find these days. Most westerns made these days are either filled with profanity, nudity and excessive violence or they are so badly written and poorly performed, they aren't worth the time of day...or both. Hollywood doesn't seem to get that just because people are adults, doesn't mean they want to watch mature content. That is what is disgusting!! This movie is just enjoyable. Cinematography is very good. Also enjoyed seeing Jesse Hutch play a bad guy.

I love a western, I can enjoy just about any one of them but this one was tough to watch. I don't care about the historical inaccuracy of it, what was so difficult to watch was the terrible acting and the meaningless and absurd scenes. Davey tames a wild horse by feeding it grass that's everywhere anyway, hops on it and rides away... oh boy.
There were so many other unrealistic scenes but the terrible acting just makes it hard to watch. Jesse Hutch was the only actor that you could say was an actor.
Someone said that all the acting was "very good", I respectfully, completely disagree.
I did like that there was no profanity or nudity which is never needed in a good western but there needs to be a good story to make it watchable.
There's no real plot or point to the movie, there are B movies, then there is this.

This movie was refreshing as a story about a character Davey Crocket we grew up learning about. The movie is filmed in TN with beautiful scenes of nature . Family based moved with a positive story on how people can see people not like them one way and and can be changed to unity and friendship.
My children 11, 9, and 4 watch this film and it held their attention. I don't remember any bad language. The film has two boys it follows that take care of chores out of necessity and my kids enjoyed seeing how a family in the 1800s lived compared to today. No TVs or electronics you eat what you kill and play with what you have.
The bad guy in this film makes this B budget movie in an A experience.

Crockett is an interesting figure, the second American celebrity in our history (after Franklin) and there's been no extensive serious film portrayal. A good movie on Davy is needed but this isn't the one.
The only thing this film has going for it is good production values. The plot is saccharine to the point of silliness (think Perils of Pauline,1914). Colm Meany is a solid actor but is annoying in some of the jejune scripts he has joined (e.g., Alleged, 2010).
Unless this film was targeting evangelicals I can't see why any thinking producer would have approved the script. Nothing here for any adult audience. Maybe we need another film rating category: N for niche audience.

If you like sappy, uninteresting, goofy frontier movies with bad dialogue and mediocre acting, this movie is for you. I almost turned it off, but I thought I would give it a chance. I wanted to like it, but it really was that bad. And don't get me started about how historically inaccurate it was.
It's too bad, since there is plenty of historically accurate research out there about Dave's Crockett. They could have made this a much better movie. While the Disney series was pretty fluffy (made for children, so I guess it had to be), Fess Parker and Buddy Ensen made it enjoyable to watch.
(I guess certain kids might like this movie)

When I was a young girl, I loved watching Davy Crockett. That was in the early 1060s. Comparatively, I think this was great film telling an old story. I enjoyed watching on this film on a quiet and relaxing Saturday afternoon. The storyline was just great! I was impressed with the storyline, characterization and the actors. There is some fighting with guns, fists, hatchet, and knives. Parental discretion advised. As a mother of a filmmaker, I know this film was not made with a huge budget. So don't expect flashy and fancy, high tech anything. Overall, the action was good and The film was a lot of fun. It is a ballad. Enjoy. 😊

As an avid David Crockett fan I only mad it as far as the private meeting with Jackson where the movie portrayed him supporting the Indian removal act. I had to stop there because I was fuming mad. The director is an idiot and a poor student of history.
Horrible writing Horrible directing Horrible acting
And an Insult to the life and legacy of David Crockett.
The director should not make any more movies if all he's gonna do is make trash.
I will end with a quote by Crockett.
I voted against this Indian bill, and my conscience yet tells me that I gave a good, honest vote, and one that I believe will not make me ashamed in the day of judgment.

Made it 15 mins and turned off. There's several storylines going on at the beginning. None are told or acted well. Why does Andrew Jackson looks like Jack Frost's (The Santa Clause) ancestor?? It makes zero sense to shoot the horse. Crockett could've shot one of the wolves and spared the horse. Then Davy Crockett passes out?? This movie is dramatic for the sake of being dramatic. If Joey from Friends was in a movie- this would be it. Also, it's historically inaccurate. I've seen better high school plays. Actually, my son's elementary Christmas program was better than this. Seriously and terrible movie. Don't waste your time.

Like a lot of the reviews have stated, this is historically inaccurate. This disappointed me because Davy Crockett is one of my favorite historical figures. To make things worse, the script writing is incredibly bad, and the acting does nothing to make it better. In a strange way, I feel like the producers used AI to create this mashup of bad action and dialogue. Even my wife, who never criticizes poor acting, couldn't help but voice her annoyance with this movie. The only good thing about this movie is it is decent enough to watch with the whole family... the action sequences are so boring and unbelievably bad, but mostly benign, and language is very mild. It is also a good depiction of a strong father figure who sacrifices all he can to protect his family. So that's nice. Overall, just could have been better writing and more believable acting.
