Prime Video’s November programming will dip its toe into Christmas and other holiday offerings such as The Holiday (2006) starring Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz and Jack Black. Deadpool & Wolverine was full of surprises. A fan-favorite moment, though, was when Ryan Reynold and Hugh Jackman get kidnapped by the resistance group and come face to face with Laura, Elektra, Blade, and Gambit. The audience screamed out loud when Channing Tatum walked in with a comic-accurate Gambit look, and even though it has been a month since the film was released, Gambit is still stuck in everyone’s minds.

While fans loved Channing Tatum’s version of Gambit, it seems like the actor has a bit of competition in Tinseltown – Taylor Kitsch. Taylor Kitsch played the role of Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. While his portrayal initially received mixed reviews, it looks like fans have changed their opinions on him as Gambit, after all.

The news of the moment keeps veering between cutbacks and comebacks. Keep your shrink on hold.
Paramount is laying off thousands and closing its TV studio, but Skydance’s David Ellison, its new owner, promises that an important new slate is on its way. Disney is shedding employees as park attendance sags, but also is investing billions in new theme park attractions and even a solid entertainment slate (Bob Iger calls it a “turbocharge”).
Even battle-scarred United Artists with Scott Stuber as its new savior promises yet another comeback after alternate decades of brilliance and disaster.
Given all this, the ongoing drama surrounding Warner Bros Discovery’s David Zaslav seems downright comforting.
I take more than an academic interest in all this since I’ve personally been enmeshed in both ups and downs (the “ups” at ’70s Paramount were more memorable).

Vince Vaughn believes Hollywood execs are too cautious nowadays when it comes to financing the type of R-rated comedies that launched his career.
Vaughn — known for comedy films such as “Swingers,” “Old School” and “Wedding Crashers” — shared his thoughts on the decline of raunchy R-rated comedies during a recent appearance on “Hot Ones.”
“They just overthink it,” Vaughn said. “And it’s like, it’s crazy, you get these rules, like, if you did geometry, and you said 87 degrees was a right angle, then all your answers are messed up, instead of 90 degrees. So there became some idea or concept, like, they would say something like, ‘You have to have an IP.’”
Vaughn used the board game Battleship, which inspired the 2012 film of the same name, as an example of Hollywood turning an IP into a “vehicle for storytelling” simply because it has a recognizable name. Meanwhile, the “IP” he...

Comedies, like horror movies, were usually an easy bet in Hollywood with the way their budgets could be kept humble and still end up being big moneymakers. Movies like Borat or Judd Apatow movies or the 21 Jump Street films could compete with summer tentpole films, and while there would still be an occasional R-rated comedy released here and there, they seem to be emigrating to mostly streamers. Vince Vaughn would be a name who you would usually see on the marquee for these R-rated comedy releases. The star of Swingers, Old School and Wedding Crashers would appear on the latest episode of Hot Ones, where he explained how Hollywood shuns his brand of irreverent comedies.
According to Deadline, as Vaughn took the hot wings challenge, he would explain, “They just overthink it. And it’s like, it’s crazy, you get these rules, like, if you did geometry, and...

Vince Vaughn made his Hollywood bones in R-rated comedies like Wedding Crashers, Old School and Swingers.
He had a hot take on why they’re no longer making them like that on the Hot Ones podcast.
“They just overthink it,” Vaughn told host Sean Evans “And it’s like, it’s crazy, you get these rules, like, if you did geometry, and you said 87 degrees was a right angle, then all your answers are messed up, instead of 90 degrees. So there became some idea or concept, like, they would say something like, ‘You have to have an IP.’”
Vaughn used the board game Battleship as a meaningless IP example, saying it became a “vehicle for storytelling” just because it had a recognizable name.
However, when he got his start in Hollywood, real life experiences were the stock.

Vince Vaughn feels Hollywood executives “overthink it” when it comes to developing the types of R-rated comedies the actor is famously known for.
The Curb Your Enthusiasm actor, who rose to fame in the late ’90s and early 2000s with his hard R-rated movies such as Wedding Crashers, Old School and Swingers, recently shared on Hot Ones his thoughts on those films not being made in this day and age.

Jonathan Frakes' 1996 film "Star Trek: First Contact" was extrapolated from the popularity of 1990's "The Best of Both Worlds," the two-part episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" wherein Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) was forcibly assimilated into the Borg. Picard had machinery surgically implanted into his body, and he was forced to become the human voice for the cold, all-conquering cyborgs. He was given the name Locutus, the Latin word for "spoken."
Picard was luckily rescued from the Borg, but it would take several additional confrontations over several more episodes for him to truly work through his trauma. Despite his pain, he managed to remain collected and mature in future confrontations.
In "First Contact," Picard had to face off against the Borg again, although this time, his anger was, for some reason, triggered to a dramatic degree. Picard transformed from a judicious leader into a vengeful killing machine, screaming at...

If most sequels tend to feel like hastily rewritten versions of the original, why can’t the same rules apply to reviews of said sequels? In preparation for viewing and critiquing Peter Segal’s “My Spy the Eternal City,” this critic returned to her own review of the first film, the spring 2020 streaming hit “My Spy.” Within that review: a number of ideas, thoughts, and opinions that could easily transfer over to this first sequel, with minimal edits.
For instance, in “My Spy,” star Dave “Bautista and a genuinely cute kid co-star can’t enliven this predictable and humorless entry into a micro-genre long due for a refresher.” Still true. Co-star Chloe Coleman and “Bautista are wonderful together — appealing, warm, and well-matched — but ‘My Spy’ just can’t capitalize on that chemistry.” We did ask for it. The plot? The “only clear plot points being the ones already done to...

Even before Covid made a virtue of isolation, experts had already been describing loneliness as an epidemic for years. Now that even the most social among us have had loneliness imposed upon us as a matter of public policy, it seems to be an issue that’s top of mind for TV creators to process through their work. Baby Reindeer revolves around two lonely people who find communion, by chance, over Diet Coke in a neighborhood pub; the disastrous fallout comes later. The titular Mr. & Mrs. Smith find each other in part because they’ve built the kind of lives they can disappear from without causing alarm to friends or loved ones who’d miss them. Ripley’s eponymous protagonist is alone by necessity: the kinds of short cons he’s running for his livelihood depend on his remaining anonymous.
Though loneliness isn’t generally a hilarious topic, it animates our current comedies,...

Squid Game — The Challenge has won the Reality category at the BAFTA TV Awards.

A car crash interview with a delusional prince, a new series adaptation featuring Patricia Highsmith’s most infamous creation, the second part of Zack Snyder’s pricey space opera and a paranormal detective show set within Neil Gaiman’s celebrated Sandman universe are among the big titles hitting Netflix in April.
Debuting April 4 is Ripley, Netflix’s glossy new take on Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Fresh from the critical acclaim he received for All of Us Strangers, Irish actor Andrew Scott will be inhabiting the role of Tom Ripley in an adaptation that will be screened in black-and-white. The eight-episode series also stars Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, and acting newcomer Eliot Sumner (son of Sting and Trudie Styler) as Freddie Miles. Written and directed by Oscar winner Steven Zaillian, Ripley was originally set for release on Showtime before it found a new home on Netflix.

The Dream (House) is dead. That’s the revelation that Margot Robbie’s Stereotypical Barbie must face midway through Barbie, when she and her friends from the real world return to Barbie Land and visit her home. In place of the Dream House, a pink paradise that served as the stage for all-night dance parties and splendid breakfasts in the morning, stands what Ken has termed “the Mojo Dojo Casa House.”
“You don’t have to say ‘dojo’ and ‘house’,” Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt) responds.
“And ‘casa’,” continues Gloria (America Ferrera).
But Ken (Ryan Gosling) isn’t having it. “But you do, because it feels good,” he insists. “Try it.”

Fighting for streaming residuals has been a hard-fought sticking point for the writers and actors negotiations, but bottom-line results of the new bonus threshold may be limited.
Less than 5 percent of Netflix originals in 2022 “would have triggered performance bonuses under the new contract between the Writers Guild of America and major studios,” Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw wrote on Sunday. The new deal between the WGA and the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) pays out performance bonuses if at least 20 percent of a streaming platform’s U.S. users consume a new original film or TV series within its first 90 days.
Shaw’s rate of 5 percent or less accounts for all Netflix original titles, he wrote — including foreign-language, animated, and unscripted programs that aren’t governed by the WGA deal. So while, say, docuseries “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal” crosses the threshold with a 30 percent share of U.

So while, say, docuseries “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal” crosses the threshold with a 30 percent share of U.

Director Gavin Hood's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" was designed to usher in a shiny new era for Fox's "X-Men" films. After the studio's original mutant trilogy came to an ignominious end in 2006 with "X-Men: The Last Stand" (a film that saw alleged sexual harasser Brett Ratner replace alleged sexual predator Bryan Singer at the helm), Fox decided to soft reboot the franchise by making a prequel film about Hugh Jackman's Man With the Adamantium Claws. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" even teed up potential spinoffs by introducing Ryan Reynolds as a pre-Deadpool Wade Wilson and Taylor Kitsch as the Ragin' Cajun himself, the smooth-talking, card-chucking thief Remy LeBeau, better known as Gambit.
Pulling what we'd now call a "Black Adam," Hood's prequel did indeed change the hierarchy of Fox's X-Men Universe ... just not in the way it intended. The film's negative critical response and middling box office turnout led to...

“Perd Hapley is the lynchpin of an unlikely TV multiverse” is the name of the article you’re reading. And it will begin … right now.
NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation features the deepest bench of hilarious supporting characters you’ll ever see outside of The Simpsons‘ Springfield. But even among a murderer’s row of comedic talent like Joan Callamezzo (Mo Collins), Jean-Ralphio Saperstein (Ben Schwartz), and Tammy II Swanson (Megan Mullally), there’s one resident of Pawnee who stands head and shoulders above the rest.
Local news broadcaster Perd Hapley (Jay Jackson) is quite simply a TV icon. Blessed with a very distinct vocal style (that the Parks and Rec fandom Wiki accurately categorizes as “semantically redundant”), Perd often turns up on Parks and Recreation to help describe what’s happening … literally.

Keeping it in the family is very much a Hollywood tradition at this point, and in the 21st century acting families are still thriving. Whether it be Cuba Gooding Jr.’s son Mason joining the cast of the last two Scream movies, Lily-Rose Depp leading The Idol, Maya Hawke becoming a fan favorite in Stranger Things, or Ethan Peck (grandson of Gregory) roaming the bridge of the Enterprise in Star Trek, there’s always a new generation of nepo babies lurching from crib to screen.
But one man is overwhelmingly leading the pack in terms of famous male offspring these days. A man who could conceivably consider the Kardashians his Warios. And that’s Stellan Skarsgård.
A Swedish gentleman well into his 70s with an effortlessly friendly demeanour and a soothingly craggy face, Skarsgård now has eight children, and it’s a solid bet that if you see the name...

"The more you prescribe, the more you'll help." Netflix has revealed a trailer for their series Painkiller, a scripted account about the origins of the opioid crisis in America. The series is directed by Pete Berg, yes that Pete Berg, director of the movies Friday Night Lights, Hancock, Battleship, Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, and Patriots Day. Over its six episodes, Painkiller sets out to unpack the "how" and "who" of the epidemic. "This is the origin story of the collision between medicine and money that allowed it to happen. One of the many things that I thought was missing [from the conversation] was the introduction of the drug into mainstream medicine. How Arthur Sackler, this psychiatrist... who specialized in lobotomies, started to realize that the future was in pills — specifically in advertising pills. Whoever could market their drug better was going to make the most money." The tone of the series acts as...

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

If you're keeping count, we're at the seventh live action Transformers film. A further outpost in the attempt to maintain a merchandising empire. Though as a scene just inside the credits makes clear, the intent is to expand it beyond Transformers to encompass other Hasbro toylines. Battleship and Barbie both suggest they've not got a monopoly interest in forcing everything into one cinematic cupboard, audiences will see a big clue as to where they intend to go.

Rihanna is lending her voice to a new project, but it's not the ninth album fans have been hoping for since 2016. On April 27, the "Lift Me Up" singer made a surprise appearance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where she announced that she will be playing Smurfette in the upcoming Smurfs musical movie.
In addition to voicing the animated character, Rihanna joins the project - directed by Chris Miller and Matt Landon - as a writer and producer, according to Entertainment Weekly. Notably, the Paramount adaptation will follow a separate storyline from Sony's three-part series, which starred Neil Patrick Harris, Katy Perry, Sofía Vergara, and Hank Azaria. The upcoming musical will also feature original songs by Rihanna. It's not the album we've long been waiting for, but new music is new music.

In hindsight, the summer of 2012 might be one for the ages, with huge films like "The Hunger Games," "Prometheus," "Men in Black 3," "Magic Mike," "Ted," and "The Dark Knight Rises" (among many others) coming out in just the span of a few months. New franchises, old franchises made new again, surprise hits -- it was a summer that had everything. It even had some legendarily huge flops.
To that end, Universal Pictures and director Peter Berg ("Hancock") suffered a brutal loss with "Battleship," a big-budget adaptation of sorts based on the best-selling board game of the same name. The film boasts an A-list cast led by the likes of Taylor Kitsch ("John Carter"), Liam Neeson ("Taken"), Alexander Skarsgård ("True Blood"), and pop star Rhianna. Given that the board game doesn't have much story, the filmmakers crafted a story that sees the Navy trying to stop an alien invasion.

Starting with the classics, Penny Marshall’s “A League of Their Own” (1992) starring Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, Lori Petty and Madonna, becomes available to watch on the streamer April 1 while we all wait for solid renewal news for Prime Video’s TV series — created by Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson — that takes the movie’s story deeper. Leonardi DiCaprio’s mind-bending movie “Inception” also arrives April Fool’s Day. Animated hits “Hotel Transylvania” and “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax” arrive the first of the month as well.
“Firefly Lane” Season 2 Part 2 will conclude the television adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s novel, which tells the story of Tully...

So, it appears that the Spring of 2023 may just be recalled as the season of big movies based on toys (I know Barbie is still several months away). Well, maybe not toys as much as games. The Tetris movie is streaming, and that plumbing duo returns next week, but this new/reboot flick harkens back to those pre-video game olden days. It’s not based on a board game (the box office dud Battleship may prevent another one for a while), but rather the “in-between” era. This is based on the big role-playing game juggernaut that swept the nation about 40 or so years ago. Sure there was a big studio adaptation way back in 2000 and a couple of minor sequels followed.

The year is 2023. Famous movies are now roleplaying games. Famous roleplaying games are now movies. The geeks have inherited the Earth, and they are not content to take your 20-sided dice. They want your three-day opening weekend box office grosses too.
Typically, Cardboard Cinema -- this column by yours truly -- is not blessed with this abundance of cinematic riches. Part of the fun for me is to find games that capture the essence of popular cultures, such as last month's "R'lyehwatch." But this month? This month we're flush, exploring blockbuster franchises of screens big and small with "The Walking Dead" and "Terminator." Oh, and we have a new movie this weekend about dragons in dungeons of some sort directed by the comedic geniuses behind "Game Night." So, you know, slow news week in the land of tabletop.
