I didn't know this was adapted from a novel until I read some of these reviews, but now that makes sense. There is a depth of pain and sorrow wrought from the passions and injustices of our human condition in every frame of this film, and I am guessing in every page of the novel, which I have not read. Some reviews seem to think it does not do justice to the book, but imo, as a film it is beautifully tragic. And very well filmed and acted. There are probably many cultural elements about the story I missed, like One Hundred Years Of Solitude, but also like that film it's a fabulous and deep work. My only complaint is I lost track of some of the characters, who they were and what time they represented. But it all came into focus later. 8/10.
Masterpiece is all I wanted to say and all that needs be said about this series. But I've got to write 600 characters in order to post this, so bear with me. I have a habit of rating a film or series up when I don't think they are getting the ratings they deserve. But there is no need to do that now and it's not possible anyway. There is no rating too high. I knew nothing about this show when I started and it took me a couple of episodes to get a sense of where it might be going. But every step of the way I was wrong. And I loved being wrong. You simply cannot predict where this is headed. The use of visual metaphor is superb and haunting. The performances are so masterful I forgot they were performances... ok I got 600 characters so I'll wrap up. The blending of wit, absurdity and tragedy is seamless enough to make Taika Waititi envious. Everything in the production of this series is perfect and I hope Netflix will produce more like it. Now that I know this is a novel I will go buy a copy. There, I'm done.
