- Recorded a comedy LP where he portrayedHenry Kissinger.
- Mars began acting in 1961 with the first national company of "The Sound of Music" as Baron Elberfeld and understudied the role of Max (also in the cast was Barbara Newborn, who became his wife). In 1963, he graduated with a degree in Fine Arts and Drama from Northwestern University.
- His father, Bernard "Sonny" Mars (born Baruch Bernard Myrski; 1914-1985), was a comedian, who was a radio and television personality.
- He had two daughters with his wife, Barbara:Susannah Marsand Rebecca. He also had six grandchildren.
- He has appeared in four films that have been selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant:The Producers (1967),Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969),Young Frankenstein (1974)andThe Little Mermaid (1989).
- Left Malcolm In The Middle in 2004 due to being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and ultimately died in 2011.
