His father wasPatrick Troughton,best known for playing the Second Doctor inDoctor Who (1963).He is the younger brother ofDavid Troughtonand the uncle ofSam Troughton,Harry Mellingand Warwickshire and England cricketerJim Troughton.He trained at the Unicorn Theatre in London as an acting ASM under the guidance of the artistic director Matyelok Gibbs.
