When actress and producerRiley Keoughreceived the first episode ofHulu’s “Under the Bridge,”she was apprehensive. There aren’t enough Native women on TV. But when they do get hired, they’re often playing cops.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “Mercy Alone,” the series finale of “Under the Bridge.”
“Under the Bridge”doesn’t have “a traditional ending,” says showrunnerSamir Mehta.
After the penultimate episode of the true crime limited series saw Warren Glowatski (Javon Walton) sentenced to life in prison for his involvement in the 1997 murder of Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta), in the finale, the white, wealthy Kelly Ellard (Izzy G) received only a five-year sentence despite having been the ringleader.
“Justice wasn’t really served in real life, so it couldn’t ever be that type of story where you get to the finale and the bad people go away,”Mehtasays. Instead, the episode focuses more on the characters “finding their best shot at peace and finding a little bit of grace in their suffering. It’s a Hollywood cliche you have to hire the nicest actors to play the meanest people, and on “Under the Bridge”a group of struggling, lonely teens committing violent crimes certainly qualifies.
Unlike other shows about teens, where the cast is pushing 30, the kids onHulu’s miniseries all are played by actors aged 12 to 16. This created a few challenges during production, due to the dark true-life plot, which centers on small-town British Columbia and the kids who assault and kill their classmate Reena Virk one night, and then basically all cover for each other while the case unfolds.

Complicated relationships and twisted secrets are at the heart ofHulu’sUnder the Bridge, and that’s not limited to just the teenage characters. Based on the nonfiction book of the same name byRebecca Godfrey, the limited series centers on the 1997 murder of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta) and the classmates accused of killing her. While the show focuses heavily on adolescent angst and the cruelty of teenage girls, it also dedicates an ample amount of time to exploring the complex dynamic between its two adult female leads, writer Rebecca (Riley Keough) and police officer Cam (Lily Gladstone).

Few documentaries have been as genuinely shocking as directorAndrew Jarecki’s 2015 true crime documentary series “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.”Using existing media, reenactments and exclusive interview footage of Durst, who had agreed to be interviewed by Jarecki, the six-episode series investigated three unsolved murders in which Durst had been a suspect. It was a captivating spectacle that became a game-changing piece of art when, the day before the series finale aired on HBO, Durst was arrested for first-degree murder after being caught on a recording stating, “What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.”

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and ExpertsJoyce EngandChristopher Rosendiscuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the packed limited series race, which has seen three new contenders premiere in the last three weeks.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve circled back to what is arguably the most competitive Emmys category this year: limited series. It feels like as good a time as any to return to my favorite race – particularly with “Shōgun”andAnna Sawaidominating the discourse, as well as the premiere of our dark horse favorite “Under the Bridge.”We talked about both shows this week with our voices, and I must say, it feels heartening — dare I type, Siri pay “Vindicated” – to have been so right about “Shōgun.”We both loved that show way back in February and the response has been off the charts.

Mumbai, April 18 (Ians) Oscar-nominated actressLily Gladstone’s performance in the streaming series ‘Under the Bridge’ has been receiving great response.
The actress portrays a cop in the miniseries, which is based on the brutal murder of Indian-origin girl Reena Virk.
Indian-origin actressVritika Guptaessays the role ofReenain the series. Virk, who was murdered by her own friends and strangers, was born in Saanich, British Columbia, Canada, and died at the age of 14.
As a teenager, she struggled to fit in and was bullied from elementary school all the way to high school. She was self-conscious about her looks, and her strict religious parents, who converted from Hinduism to the Jehovah’s Witness religion, made things even more difficult for her.
On November 14, 1997, Reena, who struggled with Fomo almost three decades ago after it became a popular slang, was lured in by the promise of friendship for a gathering.

A year and a half ago,Lily GladstoneandRiley Keoughwere still relative unknowns about to hit the big time when they were cast together in the eight-episodeHulutrue-crime thriller “Under the Bridge.”Gladstonewould steal the show in theMartin Scorseseepic “Killers of the Flower Moon,”earning an Oscar nomination and a SAG Award win. Officer Cam Bentland, played byLily GladstoneinHulu’s eight-part crime drama “Under the Bridge,”is tired. Not tired in the way that a good nap can fix, nor is she merely bored of her job with the Saanich police. “Weary” would be a better word for the drained disposition with which she carries herself, whether she’s helping her father (and captain) hit the punching bag or listening to yet another complaint about wayward teens. It’s during the latter that something clicks. A girl is missing, and even though runaway high schoolers are a routine occurrence around the greater Victoria area, hearing her brother (also a cop) refer to the young woman as a “bic girl” sparks Cam to action. “Bic,” referencing the cheap lighters found on gas station counters, is local slang for recalcitrant teens who have no one looking out for them.

Update: Soon after this story was published, a source reached out to Variety to confirm that “Daisy Jones and the Six”will not be getting a Season 2 because “it was always planned as a limited series.”
Despite the success of “Daisy Jones & the Six,”starRiley Keoughsays the band isn’t getting back together anytime soon.
Despite fans hoping — and demanding — a second season of the Prime Video miniseries adaptation of Tara Jenkin Reid’s best-selling novel, Keough tells me, “I would love to but I don’t know if it’s in the cards…I haven’t heard anything.”
The series followedDaisy Jones(Keough) and her bandmates as they make their way through the Los Angeles music scene of the 1970s. The series premiered just over a year ago to positive reviews. Keough and Morrone earned Emmy nominations as did the show for outstanding limited or anthology series.

Plot: based on acclaimed authorRebecca Godfrey’s book about the 1997 true story of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk who went to join friends at a party and never returned home. Through the eyes ofGodfreyand a local police officer, the series takes us into the hidden world of the young girls accused of the murder — revealing startling truths about the unlikely killer.
Review: While crime exists worldwide, North America’s glut of true crime stories is centered on the United States. We often take for granted that our neighbors in the Great White North are more than America’s nice neighbors or denizens of the Fifty-First State. Canada is a massive country with its own good and bad, with crimes just as heinous as anything we see in America. While the events depicted inUnder The Bridgeare not as scary as serial killer tales, the story it retells is every bit as disturbing.

The newHuluseriesUnder the Bridgeis infuriating. That’s not to say the series is not well done or crafted—in fact, far from it. This is bold storytelling that challenges the viewer to rethink their misconceptions. The result is appointment-viewing television that, by the end of the series, showcases some uncommonly powerful performances.
No, it’s infuriating because of what transpires from “actual” events. It’s tragic and horrific, and words cannot adequately describe the atrocities that occurred in the small, picturesque seaside town in British Columbia, Alberta, Canada.Under the Bridgeis where the key players wish the story stayed, never seeing the light of day.

DeepintoHulu’sUnder the Bridge, authorRebecca Godfrey(Riley Keough) defends the focus of her latest manuscript. “People can do horrible things, and that doesn’t make them inherently evil,” she insists. As she sees it, her book is simply challenging the reader to consider that an individual’s humanity is not defined by their worst deed.
