The movie musical has morphed drastically over a century. When the musical genre first came to prominence in the sound era of Hollywood, it was a space for revues with little care or thought as to a storyline connecting musical numbers. Eventually, just as the stage musical changed with "Oklahoma!"and" South Pacific, "Hollywood morphed in the same way. But it wasn't just that films such as"An American in Paris"or"The Band Wagon"told full stories with song-and-dance numbers; Hollywood went straight to the source to take stage musicals and adapt them into features. Although we're not in a Golden Age of movie musicals the way that things were in the 1960s, there are plenty of big-budget musical adaptations that burst onto the scene, as well as more low-key affairs meant to match their source material, everything from the mid-2000s adaptation of"Dreamgirls"to" DearEvan Hansen.

Dressed to the nines and ready to shine, the 2025 Costume Designers Guild Awards (Cdga) rolled out their vibrant carpet on Thursday in Los Angeles. The ceremony celebrated outstanding achievements in costume design across film, television, short-form, and costume illustration. Margaret Qualleyis teasing just how “incredibly surreal” it was to star in aRichard Linklaterfilm.

Qualley, who appears in Linklater’s upcomingLorenz Hartbiopic “Blue Moon,”toldIndieWirethat she has been trying to work with the auteur for more than a decade.

“I have been a longtime fan of Richard Linklater,” Qualley said. “I think I auditioned for him the first time 10 years ago.”

While Qualley only revealed that the film she auditioned for was in fact made, she did not say its title… although Linklater’s ’70s college-centric “Everybody Loves Some!!” was released in 2016.

Qualley’s admiration for Linklater was cemented with his 2014 feature “Boyhood,”which felt especially personal to Qualley as she was the same age as its lead character. Oscar-nominated “Boyhood”was filmed across 12 years, withEthan HawkeandPatricia Arquettestarring. The feature was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

The first Academy Awards ceremony was held on May 16, 1929, at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, California. At the time, there were 12 categories, some of them separated by genre. Rather than just having a single Best Picture category, there was an award for Outstanding Picture and one for Best Unique and Artistic picture.William Wellman's "Wings" won Outstanding Picture, and many consider that film to be the 1929 equivalent of Best Picture. Artistic Picture, however, went toF.W. Murnau's "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans," and that one ought to historically count at least as much as "Wings."

The first Oscars also had two directing categories (one for comedies and one for dramas), and three writing categories. A lot has changed in the last 95 years of Oscar history.

Holliman rose to popularity with notable performances in science fiction and Western films. In October 1959, he made television history by playingMike Ferrisin the first episode ofThe Twilight Zone,titled “Where Is Everybody?”

A woman who killed an 87-year-old Broadway singing coach by shoving her onto a Manhattan sidewalk has avoided a lengthy prison sentence by pleading guilty to manslaughter on Wednesday, and will instead serve eight years behind bars.

Lauren Pazienza, 28, teared up in court as she admitted to randomly attacking Barbara Maier Gustern on March 10, 2022. Gustern, whose students includedBlondiesingerDebbie Harry,lay bleeding on a sidewalk as Pazienza walked away, prosecutors said. She died five days later.

“Today’s plea holds Pazienza accountable for her deadly actions,” Manhattan District AttorneyAlvin Braggsaid in a statement.

Gustern’s relatives, some of whom were in court, said they were disappointed with Pazienza’s plea deal and agreed-upon prison sentence — a fraction of the maximum 25 years she would have faced if convicted at trial.
