Ok, that’s not true. People shouldn’t be watching Christmas movies in April. But November is fair game! There still might be a few people who throw a side-eye at you for diving deep into the Christmas canon right after putting away the Halloween decorations but there’s an easy fix – find holiday movies that toe the seasonal line.

This might be the hardest sell for Christmas movies to watch in November just because it’s such a top-of-mind film for the holidays.

It’s been a banner year for animated movies, with artists using the medium to tell stories about robots, cats, snails and the full spectrum of human emotion. These films are just as bold and boundary pushing as the dramas, musicals and historical epics that are seen as top contenders for Oscars. Yet they aren’t getting the same level of attention from the pundit crowd.

Well, if there was ever a time for things to change, it’s now. HeavyweightsDreamWorks AnimationandPixarhave launched awards campaigns for “The Wild Robot”and “Inside Out 2,”which are virtual locks to nab best animated feature nominations. But, these movies also aim to break into major categories, notably best picture. And you know what? It shouldn’t be an either/ or scenario. Why not both?

The network released its 25 Days of Christmas schedule Friday, revealing all the programming coming up in December. There’s something for everyone, with things kicking off at 7 a.m. and extending through at least midnight every day from December 1 to 25.

The lineup includes classics like theHome Alonefilms,Tim Burton’sThe Nightmare Before Christmas,the Santa Clause movies,Miracle on 34th Streetand multiple versions ofThe Grinch.

There’s also some non-holiday films sprinkled in, includingMoanaandToy Story.

Joker:Folie àDeuxmay have usedDick Van Dyke's "Put On A Happy Face" in its promo, but it'sSmile 2that has the whole world smiling with it. The entity clearly did its job, because the horror sequel spread to the masses in a big way.

For theaters still in shock over the historic collapse of “Joker: Folie à Deux”(Warner Bros.), there’s optimism with the “Smile 2”opening of $23 million andSean Baker’s strong award contender “Anora” (Neon) becoming the year’s best platform debut. (Baker’s also joiningIndieWire’s Future of Filmmaking Summit November 2.)

In its third weekend, Todd Phillips’ film grossed under $2.2 million to drop another 69 percent and place sixth. With $56.4 million in, its domestic gross will fall short of $65 million. Bad for the studio and worse for the theaters that counted on another $135 million or so in box office revenue (and accompanying concessions).

With “Smile 2,”Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror success inched slightly ahead of the original’s opening weekend, which went on to gross $90 million. “Smile 2”will have a hard time replicating that, particularly with “Venom: The Last Dance”(Sony) debuting this Friday.

Paramount Pictures’s decision to turnSmile,which was originally meant to be a streaming-only film, into a wide theatrical release has continued to pay handsome dividends for the studio.Smile 2,the critically acclaimed sequel, managed to (narrowly) outgross its predecessor’s opening weekend, making a handsome $23 million this weekend (just slightly ahead of our predictions). With a budget in the $27 million range, that’s a solid result for what could become the studio’s first big horror franchise since theParanormal Activityseries ran out of steam some years back.

In its first weekend of release,Terrifier 3brought in $18.3 million for its studio, landing in squarely in the first slot of this week’s top ten. Meanwhile,The Wild Robotheld steady in second place where it took in $13.4 million forUniversal Pictures,raising the film’s three-week total to $83.7 million. Meanwhile,Joker: Folie à Deuxfell from first to third place, where it brought in $7.1 million forWarner Bros.,raising its two-week total to $51.6 million. Warner Brothers also sawBeetlejuice Beetlejuicefall a spot to fourth place this weekend where it added $7.05 million, to raise its six-week total to $275.6 million. Instead, the box office phenom of the weekend was the breakout success ofDamien Leone‘s grisly indie horror flick, “Terrifier 3,”once again starringDavid Howard Thorntonas the smiling serial killer,Art the Clown,and Lauren Lavara as his final girl nemesis.

Manfred Mann’s 1968 hit single “Ha! Ha! Said the Clown” synthesizes theaters this weekend as “Terrifier 3”(Iconic/Cineverse) easily took the top spot. “Has the king lost his crown?” the second verse goes. Well, yes he did, and more, as “Joker: Folie à Deux”(Warner Bros.) fell 81 percent and likely to fourth place.

“Terrifier”is the third entry in the microbudget unrated horror series. With a $5 million budget (including marketing), it more than doubled what was anticipated as an already-decent $8 million opening. Positioned perfectly before Halloween, ahead of “Smile 2”(Paramount) next week, it built on its growing fandom and a smart social media campaign.

With an audience that reportedly is almost half Latino, “Terrifier 3”saved a bad weekend from being even worse. It’s an impressive achievement, all the more so without an MPA rating, and it could reach $50 million.

The caveat is we’ve got $18.3 million...

October to-date, Freeform ranks as No. 1 among cable entertainment networks in primetime among adults 18-34, as well as women 18-34 and women 18-49.
