Night has broken into podcasting by picking up a network that works with several top creators. The talent management firm known for repping big names likeMrBeasthas acquiredThe Roost,the podcasting network that was formerly part ofWarner Bros. Discovery‘s Rooster Teeth brand.

The Roost is home to 47 original shows, including Ethan andHila Klein‘sH3 Podcastand This Past Weekend withTheo Von.Many of the podcast hosts within The Roost’s network, includingPhilip DeFranco,Ludwig,and Smosh foundersIan HecoxandAnthony Padilla,established themselves on platforms likeYouTubebefore launching audio-forward shows. According to a press release from Night, the 47 Roost shows have combined to pull in 350 million views and 20 million monthly audio downloads.

The terms of Night’s acquisition have not been publicly disclosed, but we do know that the transaction will lead to the establishment of a podcast vertical within the Night ecosystem.

A pioneer in digital content creation is going away. Rooster Teeth, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery Global Streaming & Interactive Entertainment, announced this morning that it is ceasing operations after 21 years. The process starts today and is expected to take several months.

The news was announced at an all-hands company meeting and shared in an internal memo by Rooster Teeth general managerJordan Levin.

The music industry has long been the choking, gagging, barely surviving canary in the dank and dirty coal mine of entertainment's digital transformation.

The good news: the music business is kinda back! Admittedly, it took a decade for the choking and gagging to ease. Revenues from streaming services such asSpotifyand Apple Music finally made up for all the money lost when people stopped buying physical copies of songs. Now streaming comprises 80% of the $9.8 billion business.

Along the way, though, the industry's near-death experience forced a lot of innovation and entrepreneurship, most particularly in so-called 360 deals between a label and the performers it signs.

Rather than just relying on a cut of those vanishing music sales, labels had to look more holistically at their performers' careers, investing in and profiting from such areas as touring, publishing, licensing, and merchandise. The name of such deals refers to 360 degrees, as in all-encompassing.

In the latest round of belt-tightening to hitWarnerMedia,subsidiaryOtter Media’s online video networkRooster Teethhas laid off 13% of its total workforce, or about 50 employees.

DeFranco runs the daily YouTube-based Philip DeFranco Show, where he takes a look at current events on YouTube and beyond. He’s amassed more than 6.4 million subscribers on the platform. The casting was announced at Rtx London, an annual UK-based fandom convention for the Rooster Teeth entertainment company, producers of gen:lock.Gray G. “Rwby”volume 6, the latest installment of Rooster Teeth’s popular anime-style series, will premiere Oct. 27, the company announced.

The new season (which Rooster Teeth dubs “volumes” ) will initially be available on the company’s subscription-streaming service, which starts at $4.99 monthly, with new episodes to be released on a weekly basis.

“Rwby”is set in the magical world of Remnant, in which four girls — Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang — fight legions of evil monsters. In volume 6, “Rwby’s” female foursome have been reunited and their first mission back is one of grave importance: escorting the Relic of Knowledge to Atlas. With Beacon Academy destroyed and the kingdom of Mistral compromised, per Rooster Teeth, “Remnant’s northernmost academy may now be the safest place in the world, but making it there will be more dangerous than anyone could have imagined.”

The Fullscreen-owned company is headquartered in Austin, Texas, but wants to build closer links with fans in the U.K. and Europe, and is looking to find new talent in Britain.

Eric Cherrywill run the London outpost and build a team based in the English capital. His remit extends to building a presence in the U.K. and more broadly in international markets, across programming, licensing, consumer products, and live events. Rooster Teeth is giving its biggest fans an inside look at its early days. The digital content studio has shared a teaser for Why We're Here, a documentary that explores the 15-year history of the Austin-based company.

The teaser, narrated by Rooster Teeth co-founderBurnie Burns,traces the company's origins back to a small town in Texas, where it was founded in 2003. From there, Why We're Here will recount the major events that shaped Rooster Teeth, including the launch of major productions like Red Vs. Blue, Lazer Team, andRwbyas well as the establishment of the annual Rtx conference, which takes place each year in Austin. The documentary takes its name from the first episode ofRed Vs. Blue,which first arrived online way back in 2003.

Reconstruction is the sixth season of the perseveringly long-running web series Red vs. Blue, the machinima sitcom based on the popular Halo video game franchise. It was released online in 2008 and consists of 19 short episodes (5 to 8 minutes, with the exception of the longer 10-minute finale) depicting the further chronicles of gamers' favorite buffoons cum space marines.

My feelings on the Red vs Blue concept as a whole was already stated on my review for theRed vs. Blue: The Blood Gulch Chroniclesbox set, which contained all of the first 100 episodes—or five seasons—of the series. It's pretty much more of the same here, although the creators from Rooster Teeth have obviously grown an ambition or two. Though set within the same universe, Reconstruction is not a direct continuation of the stories told in the first five seasons, not really, but rather the beginning of a new saga in Red vs.

You can't toss a rock up in the air over a city street without braining someone who has definite but vague ideas about how new electronic media is going to "change everything." And of course they're mostly right, while at the same time you wish you could do that all day -- toss that rock, brain those people. Movies are still movies, pop songs are still pop, crummy TV shows are still crummy, etc. (The big change is now we expect to get it all for free.) Yet some things have arisen spontaneously, like mushrooms, from the keyboard-console-screen mode of cultural intercourse we're so enjoying. The epic new, remastered, five-season box set collectingRed vs. Blue: The Blood Gulch Chroniclesis a perfect example.

"Red vs. Blue"was one of the earliest and most popular machinima series on the web. Using in-game assets from the original" Halo, "the series creator,Burnie Burns(who voices Church),Matt Hullum(who plays Sarge), along with a handful of their friends, created a story around a bunch of bumbling soldiers killing time in a box canyon. The rest, as they say, is history.

GameStop has commissioned the crew, known as Rooster Teeth, to create "Halo 3: Odst" -themed episodes featuring the "Red vs. Blue"characters. I spoke to Burns and Hullum about the project, as well as their early roots.

Burns started by talking about the early days of "Red vs. Blue":

"We started the main series in 2003 and they just got really popular and Microsoft gave us a call. Of course when the phone rang and it was Microsoft on the line we thought," Well, that that was a good run!

The first thing I should probably do is explain exactly what machinima is. It’s a style of filmmaking that makes use of 3D graphics engines, the sort you see being used to power most modern video games. While machinima is typically a fan’s pursuit, some high-profile projects have been embraced by the originating development studio, such as Bungie Studios with Rooster Teeth’s “Halo” -inspired “Red Vs. Blue”series.

All of this means that what The Halcyon Company and Warner Bros are doing with “Terminator Salvation:The Machinima Series” is completely unprecedented. For the first time, we have a machinima series produced in-house by a production company to coincide with the release of both a film and a tie-in video game.Moon Bloodgood’sBlair Williamscharacter is the focus of the six-episode series (launched on May 18), which is set several years before the events of “Salvation.

By now you’ve had plenty of time to see “Terminator Salvation”the movie and play “Terminator Salvation”the game. But wait, there’s more! In an unheard-of display of synergy, Warner Bros and franchise owner The Halcyon Company have distinguished themselves by releasing the first officially studio-produced machinima spin-off series for a movie. If you don’t know what machinima is then you clearly haven’t been keeping up with yourRed Vs. Blue.

This particular series focuses onMoon Bloodgood’s character,Blair Williams(as in the game, she lends her voice as well). It will run for six episodes — the first was released on May 18 — as Williams tracks a hacker known as “The Ghost.” The series relies entirely on in-game assets, and the production was overseen by “Salvation” directorMcG.Check out the video below for an inside look.
