The year was 1973;George Lucashad just finished writing the screenplay for what would be his hit coming-of-age story American Graffiti. A poster on a wall caught his eye, an image of a dream of the old serialized films he enjoyed as a child. Films such asBuck Rogers,Zorro’s Fighting Legion and Spy Smasher flashed through his brain as he had the idea of bringing that type of B-level hero to the big screen. He would take this idea and flesh out a story of a college professor who moonlit as an archeologist adventurer. Little did he know that simple idea would yield one of the greatest and most enduring franchises in movie history as his character Indiana Jones has gone on to appear in five feature films over the course of 42 years that have grossed nearly $2 billion at the worldwide box office. For many, any time the character graces the screen,...

X-Men: The Animated Series' original roster included Colossus andKitty Prydeinstead ofGambitandRogue. The original show wouldn't have been the same without Rogue and Gambit's hectic relationship and personalities. Thirty-two years later,X-Men '97's plot likely wouldn't have been so emotional without Rogue and Gambit.
X-Men: The Animated Series' original team roster would have madeX-Men '97a very different Marvel show. Twenty-seven years after the original show was canceled,X-Men '97modernizesX-Men: The Animated Serieswhile respecting every character and event it established. In fact,X-Men '97builds upon the original series' overarching storyline with many of its main villains, heroes, and cameo characters coming back in bigger roles, and evenX-Men '97's updated opening intro tying into the plot of each episode.
X-Men '97gives each member of the titular team a visual overhaul, but it also dives deeper into their individual arcs.

ThisX-Men ’97article contains spoilers.
As a revival of X-Men: The Animated Series from the ’90s,X-Men ’97has really killed it with its first season. Not only does it capture the magic of the original show but it’s also successfully broken away from the original show’s limitations. For example, animators in the ’90s had to be strategic about how they portrayed violence on a kids show —Wolverinecouldn’t use his claws on human or mutant enemies, so he spent a lot of his time unloading on Sentinels instead. But in 2024, we haveJubileegraphically splitting a monster’s head open with her firework powers and Gambit impaled by the Mother Mold. It probably helps that this revival of the series is as much for nostalgic adults who want a more grown-up take on these stories as it is for kids.

One might think playing Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe would make it easier forChris Hemsworthto have free rein when it comes to his other projects, but that hasn't always been the case. Far too often, the actor has found himself with a gun in his hands and scruff on his face, starring in potboiler fare like "Red Dawn,""12 Strong,"and" Extraction. "Even the"Snow White and the Huntsman"films mistake Hemsworth's strengths as being that of an action hero first, a good-humored character actor second. Yet, as evident by his role in" Thor: Love and...

The release ofThor: Love and Thunderon July 8th, 2022 has brought a lot of attention to its star-studded cast. Actors likeChris Hemsworth,Natalie Portman, andChristian Baleare all A-listers with decorated filmographies, they have had some films that have been poorly received.
These range from stereotypical action flicks likeRed Dawnto surreal fantasies like Winter’s Tale, which can confound just as many viewers as it did critics. The abysmalRotten Tomatoesscores of these movies are interesting considering the actors have been part of other lauded features. The bad movies inThor: Love and Thunder’s cast’s list of credits demonstrates that even acclaimed actors have the odd bad film.

Our eyes are wide open forConnor Cruise's latest transformation. The 26-year-old son of former Hollywood coupleNicole KidmanandTom Cruiseposted a rare summer-ready selfie to hisInstagramStory on June 8. In the photo, he sported a fresh haircut and for the caption, he jokingly wrote, "New face, who dis?" The latest change in appearance is a little different from the most recent pictures the avid fisherman has posted of himself while out and about. In fact, the last photo the former actor shared that was a little far from adventure-related was back in March 2019. Luckily for fans, over the past few months, theRed Dawnstar has given...

Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings ontoDisney+,some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021,Huluis set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.

Fresh off the long-awaited arrival ofZack Snyder’s Justice League (a.k.a. the fabled Snyder Cut),HBO Maxhas no need to appease fandom culture in April 2021. But the streaming service is gonna do it anyway!
The most notable new release for HBO Max this month is the HBO seriesThe Nevers. This show, created byJoss Whedon,is set in a 19th century steampunk London and finds a sizable portion of the population (predominantly women) having been “Touched” by mysterious paranormal powers. There’s an interesting bit of irony at play here, as HBO Max is following up the Snyder Cut with a show created by his originalJustice Leaguereplacement. Or at least there could have been an interesting bit of irony here, if Whedon had not bowed out from the show and been enthusiastically left out of the marketing material by HBO.

For a long time, people have had doubts aboutChris Hemsworth’s capabilities as a leading man outside of his career-defining role as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’sThor. On paper, his track record isn’t exactly great when he’s given top billing withRed Dawn,Blackhat,In the Heart of the Sea,The Huntsman: Winter’s WarandMen in Black: Internationalall bombing at the box office.
Even his critically-acclaimed efforts likeThe Cabin in the Woods,RushandBad Timesat the El Royale hardly set the world on fire, leading many to believe that the 36 year-old’s fortunes would face an inevitable downturn once his time playing the God of Thunder came to an end. However, it looks like Hemsworth proved many of his doubters wrong following the incredible success ofNetflix’sExtraction.

With the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, we may or may not be seeing the end ofChris Hemsworth’s eight-year run in the McU that started with 2011’sThor,but if things had gone a little differently, then the Australian star might have left Hollywood before he was even cast as theGod of Thunder.
In an interview with Men’s Health, Hemsworth recalled how he intended to use his acting career to pay off his parents’ house, but in the period following his brief turn asGeorge Kirkin 2009’sStar Trek,he found that work was in short supply:
“I was about to quit. I always wanted to act, and one of the first things I wanted to do when I got any money was pay my parents’ house off. I’d asked Dad once when he thought he’d pay it off and he said, ‘Honestly, probably never.

The plot forStranger Thingsseason three is mostly shrouded in mystery. There’s so much we don’t know about the where the story is going to take these characters, but some new information has leaked that may reveal a new villain they will find themselves facing.
If you don’t want to know anything…
There’s a good chance that our favorite characters may find themselves facing off with the Soviet Union. AReddituser noticed thatIMDblisted several cast members of the third season as Russian Guard and Russian Soldier. Those descriptions have since been removed:

Tom Cruisewas coming off the breakout success of “Risky Business”when he signed on to star inMichael Chapman’s “All the Right Moves.”The sports drama cast Cruise oppositeLea Thompson, and the actress revealed in a recent interview with Closer Weekly (via W Magazine) that Cruise had her back on set when she expressed being uncomfortable with performing nude scenes.
“[The producers] wanted me to show my breasts twice in the script,” Thompson said. “I didn’t even audition because I didn’t want to take my shirt off, but I got the part and was like, ‘Okay.’”
When Cruise heard Thompson didn’t want to be nude multiple times in the film, he took matters into his own hands and spoke to the producers himself. “Tom managed to talk them out of one of the [nude] scenes,” Thompson said.

On Aug. 10, 1984, MGM/UA unveiled the war dramaRed Dawn, featuringPatrick SwayzeandCharlie Sheen,in theaters. The Hollywood Reporter's original review is below.
WhileJohn Milius'Red Dawncasts little constructive light on modern Anglo-Soviet relations, its rising at the height of our present Olympics-inspired patriotism represents a rather shrewd bit of capitalistic marketing strategy.
Reaction to the MGM/UA's release's depiction of a home-soil invasion repelled by teenage guerrillas may nonetheless prove a resounding nyet. It packs plenty of rabble-rousing ammunition, but its sloppy execution is unlikely to win any merit badges for marksmanship.

We take a look at new Blu-rays of two ’80s classics.
Shout! Factory’s relatively young collectors label, Shout Select, is something of an odd duck. This is less of a criticism than an observation as their releases so far bear no real discernible through line. We’ve gotten well-deserved Blu-rays of eagerly awaited ’80s classics like To Live and Die in La,Road House, andMidnight Run,but the label has also released/announced titles likeDeath of a Salesman,The Chinese Connection, andSimon Pegg’s forgettable 2012 film,A Fantastic Fear of Everything. So yeah, there’s something of an odd inconsistency across the catalog.

Indirectly spawned bySteven Spielberg,PG-13 is now the rating of choice among movie studios. Ryan charts the effects of its rise and rise.
Even compared to the exploding heads and melting faces ofRaiders Of The Lost Ark,The Temple Of Doom was an intense, gruesome affair. The Indiana Jones prequel may have begun with a breezy song-and-dance number, but it soon descended into a dark ghost train ride of human sacrifice, death by crocodiles, child slavery and chilled monkey brains for dinner.
One of the film’s most famous scenes saw a victim’s heart torn out and held, still pumping and oozing blood, before his gazing eyes. Some kids in the audience were probably cackling with macabre glee at all this. Parents and critics were far less amused. One reviewer even suggested that taking a child to see The Temple Of Doom was tantamount to wilful neglect.

From title changes to the addition of rubber demons, here's a selection of some rather strange movie alterations from cinema history...
The course of film production seldom runs smooth, and even the greatest films can suffer from all sorts of behind-the-scenes problems. For a very recent example, just look at Fantastic Four, a film with which suffered the kind of difficult production that will no doubt inspire books on the subject in the near future.
At any rate, the movies on this list are all examples of strange (and sometimes last-minute) changes, often imposed by producers or executives. In some unfortunate cases, the changes haven't been particularly beneficial, but one alteration turned out to be a pioneering moment in cinema history.
In every instance, the changes are unusual, surprising, or sometimes downright baffling...

Before he began a successful career as a director starting with 1987's "Adventures in Babysitting,"Chris Columbusbegan his career as a screenwriter. Two of his first scripts have since gone on to become bonafide classics - "Gremlins"and"The Goonies".
Both films, now just over thirty years old each, have also been the subject of rumored reboots in recent years, with new takes on both properties in early development. So far though, they still seem to be stuck in that stage and have yet to progress.
Ahead of the release of Columbus' new film "Pixels,"the director is out doing press and was asked by Screen Crush how the two reboots are going. He says they are still in active development, but that they're very slow going:
"The stuff that I'm involved with - theGremlinsand Goonies reboots, for instance - they would do that without me. So,...

It's sort of crazy to think thatJosh Hutchersonis still only 22-year-old. The Kentucky native has already been a centerpiece of two major studio franchises ( "Journey" and "The Hunger Games"), appeared in a Best Picture nominee ("The Kids Are All Right"), starred in an unnecessary remake ("Red Dawn"), voiced a major character in an animated release ("Epic") and starred in two classic family films ("Bridge to Terabithia"and"Zathura"). His four-year journey as Peeta comes to an end this November, but Hutcherson is actually spreading his wings into his first real adult role this weekend with" Escobar: Paradise Lost. "Directed by first-timerAndrea Di Stefano,"Escobar" centers on a Canadian surf boarder (Hutcherson) who falls for one of the nieces of the notorious Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar (Benicio Del Toro). While the movie's storyline is fiction it was inspired by the tale of a young Italian who made...

George Lucasdidn't just create the "Star Wars"universe. The filmmaker, who turns 71 on May 14, pretty much created the cinematic universe we live in now, the ones whose cornerstones include the Thx sound system at your multiplex, the Pixar movies that have dominated animation for the past 20 years, and the Industrial Light & Magic special-effects house, whose aesthetic has ruled the Hollywood blockbuster for nearly four decades. He's the pioneer of the effects-driven action spectacle and the conversion from celluloid to digital, the two trends that, for better and worse, have defined Hollywood's output for nearly 20 years.
As ubiquitous asLucasand his creations loom in our cinematic dreamscapes, there's still a lot that most people don't know about him, from how he got his start to the famous folks who mentored him or were mentored by him, from the size of his fortune to what he plans to do now...

California crumbles in the first teaser trailer forSan Andreas, the earthquake action thriller starringDwayne Johnson. Now obviously a disaster of this scale wouldn't be something to be excited about, but we're surprised that a disaster flick like this paints such a somber portrait of the movie, especially since it's coming from directorBrad PeytonofJourney 2: The Mysterious Island. But it's actually a little refreshing to have a teaser trailer that features massive destruction, and doesn't just go for the big, fun action angle.
