Demon House(2019)
Moderately underwhelmed having waited 2-3 years for this to come out
I was super excited when I heard this was finally being made/released and I love ghost adventures so I was all in. I've heard the story of the house and what happened there coming into this documentary, I knew I'd hear it again but not to this extent. 90% of the movie is the story being retold with some added info but nothing new necessarily. I was hoping for a GA style investigation but that didn't exactly happen outside of the last 12 or so min with select footage of Zak staying overnight in the house. In that way, it presented no new evidence of the haunting and was almost a waste of time because all it did was retold the story everyone knew coming into this. If you've never heard the story, it'd probably be a good doc to watch but if you're like me and know the story and wanted a movie that was mostly investigation, you're outta luck. Still not bad though, just underwhelming.
Nightcrawler(2014)
Hard to find a good thriller these days, Nightcrawler fills the void
Wow! This was one of Jake G's better performances to be honest. I've liked him in Jarhead, End of Watch, Source Code, and Brothers but he out did himself in this one. That's not to say that the other actors weren't just as good, because they were.
In my reviews I like to look at the acting, production quality, the storyline, what I really like, what I didn't like, what they could've done better, and the worthiness of spending time actually watching it and as a further disclaimer there are no spoilers here.
Actors: As I said the acting from an overall point of view was great and on point with Gyllenhaal giving one of his best performances to date.
Production quality: this film was beautifully shot and you can tell they spend a lot of time and money getting it right, definitely not a low budget film and it is aesthetically pleasing to say the least.
Storyline: the storyline was original, haven't seen too many movies that highlight a rogue cameraman who takes videos of what's going on in town and selling it off to the local new stations. The title of thriller/mystery is definitely earned and shows through. The movie has some twist and turns and the things that you think will happen don't happen and the things you'd never expect do but I won't say what, you'll have to find out for yourself. Jake gives a very convincing performance of being that weird neighbor who has too many video cameras and is overly nice to the point where you'd think he was up to something. A lot of blood and gore at times so if that's not your style you might want to shy away from this movie, however, the scenes of such are few but graphic when they occur. Probably don't want to watch this with kids around but it could be worse. The movie starts out kind of slow but picks up the pace as it goes along until the find hour or so when you won't be able to keep your heart rate under 100 because it's just that thrilling and edge of your seat type of movie...eventually. But how it plays out is worth the wait.
What I liked: the acting, the overall quality, the original story that does have plot twists and makes you grip your chair and keeps you on edge What I didn't like: the way it started out because it does start out pretty slow and pretty boring, at least as far as I was concerned that's how I felt about it. Also I didn't like that some of what happens in the movie doesn't have it's loose ends tied up but you could probably pretty accurately how things play out, I guess.
What they could've done better: like I said if they tied up some of the loose ends it would have made the story a little more complete. A little more of a back story of Jake's character wouldn't have hurt either.
Worthiness: there are a lot of crappy movies out there that I've wasted time on that I'll never get back I didn't feel that way after watching this movie. It was worth the near 2 hours that it went on for.
To close, watch this movie! I was glad that I did and you will be glad you did too! One of the best movies of 2015, so far!!!
The Interview(2014)
I'll give an honest review about this movie as an American
Alright so let's get this out of the way. I'm giving huge props to Sony for releasing this movie after being threatened and hacked. With that being said my new found love for Sony has nothing to do with this review, I'm simply giving my opinion as if none of that ever happened.
Rogen and Franco. They're the modern day David Spade and Chris Farley, or at least they're getting there. They're on the same level as Ferrell and Reilly and Hill and Tatum. You get my point, they work well together...like peanut butter and......okay enough with the comparisons.
The movie is a satire, that's something you have to realize and accept before you ever even watch it. Do not go into it expecting it to be realistic or within reason. If you have a preconceived idea that the movie will be in the realm of realism then don't even bother. With that being said, the movie was well thought out in the way of being what it is and these two pull it off perfectly. Franco being the dumb one who's idiotically friendly to the wrong people and Rogen being the one with whatever sense of responsibility you could ever picture him having to begin with. The movie and their characters, in that sense, could be compared to their roles in Pineapple Express. If you liked Pineapple Express, you'll like this movie too because it comes with that same sense of humor that just works.
There were very few parts that were like "okay, is this going to pick up?" and there were parts (more often that not) that were near non-stop hilarious. There are some jokes and comments in there that I've never heard elsewhere that were purely brilliant and hilarious.
Sony spent A LOT of money making this movie and you can tell. It doesn't have that cheesy feel to it the way the "Scary Movie" series does, it's not that kind of satire or parody. The feel of the movie really was just like Pineapple Express. It's not overly done in a cheesy type of way at all. You really should watch it for yourselves, and not just because you want to give the big "f-you" to North Korea and its hackers-watch it because it's classic Rogen-Franco genius comedy.
7 out of 10, pushing 8 out of 10. Movies nowadays hardly ever make me laugh and I don't like stupid humor like Napoleon Dynamite or the cheesiness of movies like Scary Movie and I can say that this made me laugh like I haven't in a while.
Dread(2009)
5 words: twist ending, underrated, satisfying, thrilling
I'm going to be honest...I watch a lot of movies. Like a lot of movies, it's pretty much a hobby. In fact, I watch so many movies It's been hard to find anything worth watching lately. So I started digging through Netflix last night and I decided to spend and hour and a half watching this little gem and I couldn't be any happier.
I love horror/thriller movies that have twist endings but the only problem is that they're pretty hard to come by nowadays, at least ones worth watching. However, I was thoroughly pleased with this movie.
If you, like me, love movies with twist endings then you're in for a real treat. However, if you can't handle a little gore then you might want to take a pass on this one. The movie title says it all: dread, and that's exactly what it will cause you to feel. I don't want to give anything away about the movie content itself and ruin it for anyone.
All I can say is that this movie has a very original storyline, the actors are very good, the production value is good, and it is worth watching. I never saw the ending coming and that's just the way I like it. Don't trust the bad reviews because this movie is nothing like you've ever seen before and anyone who didn't like it probably doesn't have a pulse. This movie was an 8/10 for me but depending on the amount of movies you watch it could be rated even higher for you.
Excision(2012)
Brilliantly disturbing, wonderful twists and turns. One of the better "catch me if you can" type movies.
"Catch me if you can" type movies...ya know, like it has a lot of twists and turns?! Okay, now that that's cleared up lets move on.
I just finished watching this movie and I have three words to describe the experience: Oh. My. God. Although this movie may not be suitable for some people who are sensitive to gore, people who enjoy movies like "Hostel" and "The Human Centipede" will also enjoy this movie. I know I said "enjoy" and I don't mean that in a sense where you would actually be smiling throughout the entire movie, gleaming with joy. When I say "enjoy" I mean it in the sense that you appreciate the directors work in order to present something disturbing in a cinematically masterful way.
As I said, this movie is brilliant. I realize that this movie is listed as a horror, and it is one indeed. However, it is not the traditional horror film. It's new, it's fresh. It's more of a horror movie in the way that you are actually horrified by the events taking place. If you're watching it in the right mood, you can find the dark comedy in it too. As for a drama, that genre shines through at times as well.
I don't usually like to talk about the storyline too much, although I do click the "spoiler alert" button just in case I describe the movie in a way that could ruin it for some people. I feel compelled to talk about the family though. So below I will give a brief description of each.
The mother: She's a wanna-be high class woman. She tries too hard to be too proper and she acts in a way that would make most people want to vomit. She was my least favorite character based on her disgustingly, terribly, proper attitude throughout the movie. She's the type of mom you wanna send away to summer camp year round.
The father: He's almost deadbeat...almost. He's a guy who you can tell is just putting up with the daily gruff he takes from his wife. He certainly doesn't wear the pants in the family and would probably rather spend the evening drinking a beer and watching a game than deal with his own family. He's desensitized in a way to what's going on.
The youngest daughter, Grace: She is absolutely adorable. She, unlike many people in this movie, is normal. She's a cute little girl in her teens who has Cystic Fibrosis and although she doesn't appear to be dying, to my surprise she was worse off than I thought and you'll probably think also.
Now, for my favorite, the older daughter Pauline: Oh where do I start? She, by most peoples accounts, is a effing lunatic. She's doesn't appear as outwardly crazy as she really is, and believe me although unkempt, she is truly more disturbed on a much deeper level than outward appearances will show. I will give her one single benefit of the doubt and that is that you can see her humanity shine through at times. But believe me, it's few and far between.
The storyline is fresh and not beat into the ground like most films nowadays, which was a plus. As previously stated, it is gory and "erotic" in a sense, not the kind of "erotic" that will turn you on...or at least it shouldn't. Definitely not a movie you wanna watch around kids by any means. It is disturbing. It is shocking. It has one of the best twist endings ever. It is skillfully acted. It is brilliant. It is a MUST watch. Ready...GO!
Chernobyl Diaries(2012)
Why the low ratings and bad reviews? Have you people been exposed to radiation?
Not quite sure why this movie is a 5.1 on IMDb. It seems like all the good movies are rated low, and all the terrible movies are rated high. I'm actually starting to get annoyed with IMDb for that reason. The people reviewing/rating the movies that they review/rate don't know what they're talking about most of the time.
Anyway now that I got that out of the way, lets talk about the movie. This movie is beautifully shot and the sound quality is superb, you can tell it's not a low budget film. The setting is eerie and is a character in itself, it sets the tone for sure. The acting is good and the storyline is original.
Now, I will admit that this movie is more of a thriller than a horror. There are some typical "I wasn't expecting that to happen" spooks but thats about it. I'll call it a creepy thriller. The movie is relatively fast paced, there's no real down time and it doesn't drag which is hard to come by these days, the story moves along at a nice pace and is intense from the first incident on. Incident meaning when the action starts up, which also doesn't take long to happen...you're probably looking at about 20-25 minutes of back story and the rest of the time it's pedal to the metal.
Just based on originality, this movie wins. However, the fact that it kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next makes it great which is why I'm willing to give this one an 8/10. This movie is best watched in the dark, as the tone of the movie is dark and I feel like it helps to solidify the creepiness. Definitely recommend taking the time and spending the money to see this movie, you won't regret it!
Greystone Park(2012)
Not your average "found footage" film, surprisingly good
I can't seem to get away from these "found footage" films. One after another, they just keep rolling in and are obviously a trend of the decade. Typically, I can't say I find quality in these types of films, they're usually extremely shaky (reference V/H/S or Crowsnest) and unwatchable just based on that alone. This movie didn't bother me as much as others, in that aspect.
The storyline is good. I won't go into it much, but it's better than movies like it (reference Grave Encounters or Episode 50). Don't expect to see a straight up and down horror movie here, it's more of a psychological horror movie and yes...there's a difference. But it works, it's a movie that gets under your skin. On that note I MUST mention how much I loved the subliminal images in this movie. If you watch this, which you should, look for the picture within the picture. Don't just watch the actors, indulge in their surroundings and take it in and you'll be surprised at what you find. This movie was very skillfully made in that aspect.
Overall, don't just look at the "3/10" rating this movie was given. Whoever rated this movie low was expecting all the wrong things out of it or just didn't give it a chance. I personally don't usually watch movies rated less than a 5.5 but I decided to give it a chance. I don't know exactly why I did, but I'm glad I did and I think you would be too.
Crowsnest(2012)
Melodramatic and extremely annoying. Do NOT trust the 5.7 movie rating, it's not right!!!
The title of this review says it all. The characters in the movie are overplayed as "real people" and it just does not work. It's commotion all the way through. This movie is a day time soap opera meets a B list horror film. There are so many "go on a trip into the woods and die because of it" movies out there that the originality factor is very, very low.
To be quite honest, the "found footage" theme is so old and unoriginal too that that fact alone puts a huge dent in the rating of this movie straight off the bat. Granted its not as shaky as typical "found footage" films, it's still what it is and you can't change that fact. The actors in this movie aren't that good, but I'm not too sure if decent actors would be able to make this movie any better.
The movie starts off slow and just drags. D-r-a-g-s. Drags. After the first big incident, they attempt to pick up the pace but with the mixed in melodramatic storyline it just doesn't work. I would say that if you like movies like Wrong Turn 4 or Cabin Fever 2 (notice Im not talking about the original movies there) then you'll probably like this movie too. Anyone who rated this movie higher than a 3 must have been under the influence of stupidity.
The Cabin in the Woods(2011)
Poor marketing/advertising skills are the downfall of this movie, I understand why some don't like it
The problem with this movie is that it was advertised as a horror/slasher movie. It's not. It's a combination of a comedy, a thriller, and a slasher. I myself, didn't love or hate this movie. I was, however, disappointed at the fact that it wasn't what I was expecting at all.
What this movie lacks in perception of reality, it makes up for with originality and that's what makes it watchable. The injuries sustained by some of these characters should have been life ending and weren't. Some of the injuries were portrayed poorly and taken lightly. I also suspect that the people who will like this movie the most are people who enjoy a variety of monsters being thrown into one film. It's a little overdone, in my opinion, but some might like it.
Don't expect to be scared by this movie, expect to laugh more than you're jumping out of your seat, and don't be too disappointed because you're watching an original movie that is writing its own chapter in its genre.
V/H/S(2012)
WARNING: May cause sleepiness, anger that you paid for it, and disgust that you wasted your time watching it.
Wow. Where do I start? How about by telling you not to waste your time at all. I'm unbiased yet critical in my reviews, I will admit, but this movie deserves to be destroyed and never shown to the public. Ever.
I'm highly disappointed, the previews made this look good and I couldn't wait for it to come out. It's B list work at best. The cast is a group of unknowns but it wouldn't even be considered a "good movie" if the cast was made up of more recognizable faces. The fact that people are trying to pass this off as "found footage" is sad. For a "found footage" film to be successful, the story as to why it was recorded in the first place should be plausible at best. The 5 "found footage" VHS tapes/stories that make up the length of this movie are no where near plausible by any means.
There are very few scares, if any at all. The only parts you could consider scary are when there's a sudden loud noise you weren't expecting or a quick turn of the camera towards something you weren't expecting. But don't get me wrong, even those typical hallmark scares aren't even scary in this particular film.
If you want to add two hours of disappointment into your day, then I would suggest watching this movie.
Lovely Molly(2011)
How is this movie getting bad reviews? Best of its genre by far.
Where do I start? How about by telling you that this movie is the best psychological horror film I've ever seen! Which is is saying a lot, I'm quite critical of movies.
Gretchen Lodge's performance was absolutely stellar. Who's Gretchen Lodge you ask? I didn't know either, but I sure do now! She plays the perfect victim and the perfect psycho in this beautifully shot film. That's not to say the other actors weren't stellar as well, because they were and I was absolutely blown away.
I wasn't expecting much out of this movie to be honest. I always check user reviews and there were a couple negative reviews that had my doubts a little high. However, do NOT and I repeat DO NOT listen to them. The best way to watch a movie and get what you want out of it is to watch it with no expectations. If you don't know the cast, like I didn't, it makes an amazing performance on all ends that much more appreciated.
Expect this movie to be more on the psychological side of things rather than scary. There are some scenes that will have you wishing you would've been peeking between your fingers to watch it, though.
Overall: Great acting, great story, beautifully shot, twist ending, GREAT MOVIE.
