An historical period piece that needs no embellishments but in the wrong hand has ended up a pantomime.
Historically this is a slur but forgetting this as a piece of entertainment I was left wanting.
The obscure camera angles were baffling. Why hire that many extras and create costumes in detail for the camera to be miles away? Creating drama for the lense to intrude on but not always from a spectator POV, the opening scenes were awful.
The use of lighting was harsh and unrealistic but the use of music was even worse. Nimrod bleeding into Mozart in the 1500s? This had potential to be astounding, to top Elizabeth R, a ground breaking production for its time. The score could have had the potential to equal that of dances with Wolves, the deer hunter or the armed man.
Cate Blanchet held this piece together despite the director and Cinematography.

The opening scenes were promising, atmospheric with a dash of hammer horror exaggeration. Brake is hamming it up big style and it's a joy to see him without screaming profanities covered in his and others blood (although I do enjoy his profanities). Daniels makes this movie! He is cute, goofy and his comic timing is surprising. Moon looks fabulous but a tad hammy and Kudos to the costume and make up department.
The writing was terrible! Scrip and Story, really let down the whole production down and had none of the subtle comedy of the original munsters but more dumb and dumber meets bad 2000s scooby doo. Was hoping for an Abbott and Costello style feel.
More than anything I HATED the modern pop world feel (how many neon signs can you fit in one film?!) Had so much potential to embrace the old universal horror feel but so much CGI!

No matter how many times I watch this it's like being with an old friend. Even if it's on Television I can tune in at any point and enjoy the ride.
The acting, casting and costumes are implacable. Every inch of set design has been thought out (we will excuse the shots of the upper deck on the bow during the sunset shots).
The film doesn't age and I would despise a remake. All aspects that Cameron has put in place just work. The sumptuous legendary Titanic with all its complex characters and intertwining stories of class struggle and inequality whilst precariously depicting real people in a real tragic episode. The soundtrack alone is hauntingly beautiful and conjures up images from the film in one's head wherever they may be.
Titanic will forever linger in the mind and as every April comes around the films tragedy is paralleled by the reality of the sinking. A beautiful piece of celluloid that has enriched my life and makes me weep each and everytime I see it (at least 4 times a year).
