Drivers have been given an unusual tip to save fuel and driver more safely - keep a bowl of water on their front passenger seat.

This unconventional piece of advice that has taken theTikToksocial media platform by storm isn't all about hydration, but about curbing unnecessary acceleration and braking. Select finance experts fromChooseMyCarsaid: "Keeping an open bowl of water on your passenger seat is a great deterrent for unnecessary acceleration and braking.

"If you hit the accelerator too hard, you'll see water pour out the sides; likewise, if you're driving too fast and braking hard you'll notice water on the seat. The best bowls to use for this are small cereal bowls, with water about an inch from the top."

They also proposed other useful hacks, such as parking your car facing the morning sun during winter to lessen engine warming time. Using your garage as it was intended, to store your car also helps to maintain better temperatures for fuel efficiency and ultimately reduces fuel consumption by using less air conditioning or heating, reportsBirmingham Live.

Vanarama has endorsed the water bowl technique, advising: "When you're driving, imagine there's a bowl of water on the seat next to you, that shouldn't spill. Braking gently, avoiding rushing through gears and keeping the speed at a reasonable level, can all help reduce the amount of fuel burnt on a journey."

One motorist retorted: "Until a cat runs out and you need to brake suddenly. Then you've soaked your car and potentially launched water into your electrics!" Another quipped: "Whoever came up with this nonsense should have a bowl of water emptied over them!".

"A cereal bowl with water an inch from the top! It might just work if you're in a funeral cortege; some of us have places to go," another driver remarked sarcastically.
