Former Aberdeen player accused of attempted murder of man in pub

A trial has been fixed for next year

A FORMER top-flight Scottish football player is accused of the attempted murder of a man in a pub.

PeterHetherston, 59, is alleged to have assaultedCharlesHouston at The Joker in Bellshill, NorthLanarkshire,on July 2 2022.

The ex-Raith Rovers andAberdeenmidfielder is joined on the charge by Martin Hetherston, 56, and 31-year-oldLaurenMcGowan.

Courtpapers allege the trio punched Mr Houston on the head which caused him to lose consciousness.

It is claimed that Mr Houston then fell to the ground and struck his head on the floor.

The three are alleged to have seized Mr Houston by thebodyand pulled him.

The charge states this was to his severeinjury,permanent impairment, permanent disfigurement,dangerof life and attemptedmurder.

Peter and Martin Hetherston, both of Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, face a separate charge of anassaulton Ian Mitchell at the same place and date.

It is claimed that they repeatedly punched him on the head and uttered threats to him.

All three pled not guilty today at the High Court inGlasgow.

A trial was fixed for Aprilnextyear.

Hetherston, known as “Silky”, made more than 350 times during his 17-year senior career.

He was part of theRaith Roversteam which won the First Division in 1992/93 under Jimmy Nicoll - playing more than 100 times in three years for Rovers.

He left for Aberdeen,missingthe club’sCoca-ColaCup triumph.

After retiting from playing, he had spells managing Raith Rovers for two years and Albion Rovers.

He was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame in 2016 and also featured in the 2001filmA Shot At Glory which also featured Godfather legend Robert Duvall andRangersidol Ally McCoist.
