Briefing
UK: The general election (voting is from 7am to 10pm, identification is needed).
US: Independence Day.
On this day
In 1776 the US Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress, with the 13 American colonies severing their political connections to Great Britain; in 1862 the Rev Charles Dodgson was joined on a Thames rowing trip by the young daughters of Oxford University’s vice-chancellor, including Alice Liddell. Dodgson told the girls a story, which on November 26, 1865, was published as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, under his pen name Lewis Carroll; in 1954 the rationing of fresh meat was lifted in the UK, ending 14 years of restrictions that were introduced in the Second World War in 1940; in 1995, after a leadership contest, the prime minister John Major secured his position as leader of the Conservative Party. He won the votes of 218 of his party’s MPs while John Redwood got 89 votes; in 2017 North Korea tested its first intercontinental ballistic missile. The missile flew for 37 minutes, falling 578 miles away from the launch site in the Sea of Japan.
Nature notes
Otters have become a frequent and hugely rewarding sight in UK cities. Waterside walks in places as diverse as Glasgow, Carlisle and Castleford can throw up a delightful glimpse of these semi-aquatic mammals as they twist and turn through the water before vanishing in a line of bubbles. However, there are worrying signs that the recent deterioration in water quality is badly affecting them. As eel stocks continue to plummet and sewage and agricultural poisons choke fish populations, the presence of otters in cities may be a sign that they are having to travel further for food. Otter numbers in Wales are falling, and without tackling water company pollution, this decline will continue all over the country. Jonathan Tulloch
