In1721Edward Colston, a member of the slave-trading Royal African Company, died, aged 84. A statue erected to honour his philanthropy was toppled into Bristol harbour on June 7, 2020, during Black Lives Matter protests; in1862the Confederate Congress in Richmond revised its US Civil War conscription policy, exempting plantation owners with more than 20 slaves from military service; in1975the first episode of the US sketch show NBC’sSaturday Night(Saturday Night Livefrom 1977) was broadcast. Chevy Chase bellowed “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!”, which became the catchphrase — on the first show he was joined by fellow comedians including Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi. Guest host George Carlin did not feature in any of the sketches as he was reportedly “stoned out of his mind”. TheBlues Brothers(1980) andWayne’s World(1992) films were developed from sketches featured on shows; in1987a mini-flotilla, using sonar equipment, completed the biggest search of Loch Ness, hoping to find evidence of the legendary “monster”. The most famous thrush anvil is found in JRR Tolkien’sThe Hobbit.Bilbo and his companions are outside the Lonely Mountain wondering how to get into the dragon’s lair and steal his hoard when a song thrush begins tap-tapping a snail against a stone — and leads them to the secret door. Thrush anvils are usually found in more mundane places: lanes, scrubland, pasture and brownfield sites. But they also grace beautiful places such as Birdforth Bridge in North Yorkshire.
