Sir Keir Starmer’s son recently celebrated finishing his GCSEs. “I came back and he had put all his exam books in the bin and all his school uniform in the bin,” Starmer recalls with a laugh.

As Starmer prepares to enter Downing Street on Friday — now an inevitability if the polls are correct — his biggest concern is the impact that it will have on his children. His son turned 16 at the weekend and his daughter is 13.

“It’s a big change,” he says. “And it wouldn’t be fair to me to say there isn’t a degree of apprehension on their part. You can imagine the impact if you’re 13 or 16.

“If you’re under five, it probably doesn’t get noticed so much.
