What Makes a Disney Princess?

Of all of Disney’s beloved characters, there are only 13 official princesses. With over 100 years of Disney content, you’d think there’d be more, so why isn’t there? Believe it or not, there are criteria a character has to have to be labeled as an official Disney princess, such as:

1. The character must be the lead heroine in an animated film.
2. The character must be human.
3. The character must be royal by birth or marriage or do a heroic act.
4. The character’s film must not be a total flop or smash hit.

As of December 2023, 13 Disney characters meet the above criteria: Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Moana, and Raya.

You may notice that some other famous names are not on this list. Elsa, Anna, Mirabel, and Elena of Avalor are considered “Honorary Disney Princesses.” These characters are often associated with the official princess franchise but are better marketed as their own entities. For instance, Anna and Elsa (from the record-breaking hitFrozen) earn more money for Disney as a sister duo rather than 2 princesses. Similarly, Mirabel fromEncantomay have saved her family’s magic with a heroic act, but she’s better marketed with the rest of the Madrigal family than with the princess franchise.
