On the morning of May 24, 2024, the Institute of Urban Meteorology, CMA, Beijing organized a Seminar on the Development and Application of Key Technologies for Wind and Solar Energy Numerical Forecasting Models. The aim was to explore ways to better implement the "Comprehensive Research and Development Plan for Regional and Specialized Numerical Forecasting Models (2024-2025)" issued by the Department of Forecasting and Networking, China Meteorological Administration, and improve the meteorological service support capabilities of domestic wind and solar energy numerical forecasting models. The seminar was attended by Gong Zhiqiang, director of the Numerical Forecasting Division and Jiang Pinping, deputy director of the Climate Division of the Department of Forecasting and Networking, CMA, Ma Shanshan, deputy director of the Emergency Response and Disaster Mitigation Division and Yang Limin, researcher of the Forecasting Division of Beijing Meteorological Service. Experts and technical personnel from relevant departments of the CMA Center for Earth System Modeling and Prediction, CMA Public Meteorological Service Centre, Institute of Tropical and Marine Meteorology (ITMM), CMA, Guangzhou, and Institute of Urban Meteorology, CMA, Beijing also participated in the seminar.

The project leader, Chen Min, introduced the background and tasks of the wind and solar energy numerical forecasting model research and development from the "Comprehensive Research and Development Plan for Regional and Specialized Numerical Forecasting Models (2024-2025)". Subsequently, the Institute of Urban Meteorology, CMA, Beijing, CMA Center for Earth System Modeling and Prediction, CMA Public Meteorological Service Centre, and Institute of Tropical and Marine Meteorology (ITMM), CMA, Guangzhou shared their initial achievements in key technologies for wind and solar energy numerical forecasting models and discussed their future research and development plans. Participants discussed the establishment and optimization of CMA's specialized numerical forecasting models for wind and solar energy and finalized a detailed work plan. Jiang Pinping and Gong Zhiqiang summarized the meeting and put forward detailed requirements for the research and development of the numerical forecasting model for wind and solar energy.

Jiang Pinping emphasized the higher requirements for CMA's wind and solar energy numerical forecasting models and the need to concentrate efforts on achieving results. The meeting discussions were clear and well-thought-out, and the participants agreed to follow the principles of intensive management and collaboration to implement the work plan discussed during the meeting.

Gong Zhiqiang highlighted the clear discussion and ideas from the meeting and stressed the importance of implementing the leadership’s instructions from CMA, focusing on the coordinated research and development work at the national and provincial levels, and leveraging the advantages of regional numerical forecasting centers in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou to strengthen intensive technology and improve the joint research and development mechanism.
