Abstract:
The core of the philosophy of Mencius lies in his advocacy of man having an inherent inclination towards goodness, which forms the basis of his view on human nature being good. While virtue requires the expansion and following of these emotions so that they can flourish in appropriate situations. When we see a child fall into a well, we all probably feel frightened and want to lend a helping hand. However, a sage can extend the same emotions towards the people, even if they are strangers or their sufferings cannot be witnessed firsthand. Scholars generally interpret the expansion of emotions as a form of judgment or analogy, but Franklin Perkins takes a different approach, arguing that the cultivation of emotions must be carried out at a more fundamental phenomenological level, with the aim of shaping the self so that the world appears in a certain way.
