This traditional sport boasts a rich history, dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907), when it was introduced to celebrate the marriage of Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo and Princess Wencheng. Legend has it that the playful and energetic yak races delighted the princess, helping her overcome the homesickness of leaving her homeland.

Today, yak races remain a beloved part of the festival, featuring yaks in various colors, from black to white and spotted. These races add a touch of lighthearted fun to the event, captivating audiences with their unexpected charm.
