Happier Than Ever-Billie Eilish metacritic/aoty

-Billie Eilish’s explosion onto the music scene is unique in a way that is comparable to basically no one, being immediately loved by mainstream listeners, indieheads, alt-kids, and the music industry/award shows at large. She essentially received the level of fame one would expect of a Justin Bieber type while still having some sort of “cred” from music nerds (at least the ones that don’t hate women with dyed hair). So after sweeping the Grammy’s and the love of music listeners die-hard and casual, the question arose whether or not she was able to do it again. While the singles leading up to her sophomore release had me *very* worried, I’m “happier than ever” to say that “Happier Than Ever” is even better than her debut. I’ll start this off by getting some of my complaints about the singles out of the way, because most of them are the worst tracks on this album and would say most songs here don’t have the same problems as them. Besides “My Future” and “Your Power”, I think the singles really struggle with song structure, either having a lackluster hook or verses that aren’t interesting – or in the case of “Lost Cause”, both. But more than anything, and this affects every single besides “My Future”, I think the biggest problem is FINNEAS’s production, which I had an issue with a for a lot of her debut as well. FINNEAS’s minimalistic approach, when done poorly, makes it feel like the beats are empty, hollow, or not full, and it can often feel like those songs have nowhere to go past the first minute. Thankfully, these are problems that do not extend through most of “Happier Than Ever”. While most of the songs here are mellow and lowkey, there’s still plenty of songs with different energies to keep the tracklist interesting, and I think FINNEAS does a better job at giving the production on each song an arch to make the song feel like it’s going somewhere. Billie and her brother work with various styles on this record such as pop, indie, neo-soul, hip-hop, IDM, industrial, pop-rock, folk, R&B, spoken word, even bossa nova. I also really love the mixing here, with everything sounding clean and no elements taking up too little or too much space in the mix but not to the point that it sounds hyper polished. And while Billie’s voice does stick to its typical soft delivery, she does use a good bit of this record to experiment with using her full voice, even going as far as to scream on the title track. I hope this is something she continues to play with in the future to keep her music a little more dynamic. My only real problem with the construction of the album is that it’s probably a couple songs too long, I think the record would have worked better with a few tracks cut (most likely some of the singles and the closer). Speaking of which, while I think “Male Fantasy” is a solid song, I don’t think it adds much to the album that wasn’t already addressed by other songs here and I think the title track would have been a much stronger as a closer. All that said, the songs are well constructed, the bangers hit hard, the folkier bits sound dreamy, and I think it shows incredible growth from both Billie and FINNEAS. That growth is extended into Billie’s writing, which is the most mature it’s ever sounded to date. I always thought the criticism that Eilish’s writing was trying to hard to be edgy to be overexaggerated and in bad faith, but there is a noticeable amount of depth that I think the best tracks here have that her debut that her debut didn’t pull off as well, seeming a little juvenile at points. It’s clear that she really gave it a lot of thought about the issues she wanted to write about and what she wanted to say, which is a good thing because Billie has a lot to say on “Happier Than Ever”. Much of this album has to deal with Billie’s response to all of the fame she’s recently received, which pretty much everyone knows she hasn’t enjoyed everything that’s come with it. And for good reason – on top of having no privacy and everyone having an opinion on you without knowing you, Billie has also been the subject of a lot of discourse, think pieces, and criticism from music journalists, news headlines, narcissists who think of themselves as modern day philosophers, and seemingly anyone who had an internet connection regardless if they actually knew anything about her or her work. Anyone would have a hard time dealing with that, especially someone who became a household name before turning eighteen. She also spends a lot of this record dealing with how people have sexualized her and some of the abuse she has received from men and specifically one boyfriend that I won’t name - which unfortunately these are all things you’re probably aware of if you’ve heard anything about Billie and how the public, the media, and how her boyfriend have treated her. Billie speaks about it with honesty, maturity, and a lot of insight that I don’t typically hear from musicians on the radio, which I must commend her for, and it’s just awful that she had to go through any of it. I still haven’t settled on a rating as I write this, I will probably choose seconds before hitting post and I wouldn’t be surprised if that changes by the year’s end, but I thought this was fantastic. I’m not sure how other people will respond to this - I honestly think it’s less accessible than her debut by being more specific about what she’s going through, dealing with darker topics, and not having many potential mainstream radio hits beside the singles - but I think the production has improved, Billie has shown more versatility and is a stronger performers, and her lyricism has matured so much in the past two years - it’s growth on all fronts in my opinion. I came into “Happier Than Ever” thinking I was about to hear a regression and what I ended up getting was the album I’ve been wanting from Billie Eilish since I found her in 2018. Absolutely golden.

-Billie wakes up from nightmares, and real life remains difficult and tasty. The artist left the dreamlike universe of her previous album and, with her eyes open, she sang about real life. Happier Than Ever is one of the year's bravest records. Billie gives herself in flesh and blood as she sings with surprising and stimulating vocals. If you don't remember what it's like to be in post-adolescence, listen to this record.
Billie bossa nova

-Although we thought WWAFAWDWG would be impossible to top, Billie Eillish has done it again. The album makes sense when put together. Her single choices were poor and although the album didn’t have any no.1 hits it’s definitely successful and on par with its predecessor if not better. HTE is cohesive and she gets more personal than ever, she proves to the world that she’s not just a one hit wonder and isn’t going anywhere soon, most sophmore albums turn out to be slumps but with the likes of Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift, Lorde and many other artists whose sophomores turned out to be good, she’s shocking the world all at the age of 19. Poor singles but a force to be reckoned with when it comes to the album. My favourite track has to be the title track and billie bossa nova
