Focus

Iztapalapa is a municpality located in the south-east of Mexico City. With a population of approximately 1.8 million in an area of 117 sq km, Iztapalapa is one of the most densely populated areas in Mexico City. One of the most marginalized areas in Mexico City, Iztapalapa is characterized by limited public services such as water, sanitation, health and education.

Crime and violence, mainly linked to drug trafficking and poverty, is a significant concern in the municipality. UNODC’s Urban Safety Governance Assessment is currently underway and results of the Assessment are expected in the third quarter of 2020.

Urban Safety Governance Assessments

Data:

- Over 90% of its territory is urbanized.

- More than a third of people live in poverty.

- Around 35% of the borough’s residents live in poverty.

- Around 39% of houses have just one bedroom.

What we know:
- The suburb of Iztapalapa is the most densely populated area of Mexico City.
- It’s been estimated that 18% of all prisoners in Mexico City have lived in Iztapalapa.
- People from all over Mexico have poured unchecked into the area, and the suburb is still growing.
